Career Medical Officer (CMO)
Cessnock District Hospital
Multiple permanent roles available, talk with us about what that can look like for you

We're building something new, and we're looking for the right clinicians to help shape it.

At Cessnock District Hospital, we're investing in our medical workforce and establishing Career Medical Officer positions to strengthen senior medical support across our Emergency Department and hospital.

What an opportunity to play a key part in defining how it evolves, and influences service delivery, help identify areas for growth and innovation, and contribute to the ongoing development of our hospital and wider health service.

Flexible appointment options are available, with a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week through to full-time employment. Regular rostered days can be negotiated, and we welcome discussions to accommodate your preferred working arrangement.

Why Join Us?
At Cessnock District Hospital, you'll find something increasingly rare in healthcare: a genuinely supportive, close-knit environment where medical staff are valued, respected and connected to the wider healthcare team.

We are proud of the culture we've built, one where collaboration comes naturally, clinicians know each other by name, and support is readily available when needed.

When you join us, you'll work alongside:
• An experienced and highly respected nursing workforce.
• Approachable and engaged senior clinical leaders who are committed to supporting medical staff.
• Dedicated operational and administrative teams who understand the realities of frontline healthcare.
• A multidisciplinary team united by a shared commitment to delivering outstanding patient-centred care.

Connected, Collaborative and Never Professionally Isolated
This role offers an ideal balance of autonomy and teamwork, allowing you to maintain broad clinical skills while being supported by extensive specialist networks across Hunter New England Health:
• John Hunter Hospital.
• John Hunter Children's Hospital.
• Maitland Hospital.
• Regional hospitals across Hunter New England.

Established referral pathways, virtual care services and access to the Northern Retrieval Advice and Coordination Service (NRACS) ensure you're well supported when managing complex patients while helping deliver high-quality care close to their home.

Join a Hospital on the Rise
There has never been a more exciting time to join us - the NSW Government's $138 million Cessnock Hospital Redevelopment will transform healthcare delivery across the Lower Hunter, delivering a modern Acute Services Building expected to open in 2028.

The redevelopment will include:
• A significantly expanded Emergency Department.
• Contemporary inpatient accommodation with modern single and double rooms.
• New operating theatres and day surgery facilities.
• Expanded medical imaging services.
• Modern pharmacy and sterilising services.
• Enhanced virtual care capabilities.
• Contemporary models of integrated care for patients with chronic and complex conditions.
• Sustainable, future-focused infrastructure and improved green spaces.

Make a Real Difference to Regional Communities
At Cessnock District Hospital, you'll help ensure patients can access high-quality healthcare close to home, particularly those living in rural and regional communities.
You'll support diverse populations, including Aboriginal communities, older people and patients who benefit from receiving care while remaining connected to their families, support networks and local communities.
The impact of your work will be visible every day, contributing directly to the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.

Live Where Others Holiday
When the workday ends, the Hunter Valley offers an exceptional lifestyle that's difficult to match.
Whether you're looking for space to raise a family, opportunities for outdoor adventure or a thriving food and wine culture, you'll find it here - from Cessnock, you're only minutes from:
• Australia's most renowned wine region
• National parks, walking trails and outdoor recreation
• Award-winning restaurants and cellar doors
