Shoalhaven Hospital is a busy rural hospital which employs over 1,000 staff and is the main acute care hospital for the Shoalhaven region, providing emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services.  Shoalhaven Hospital has an Intensive Care Unit focusing on high dependency and coronary patients, Children’s Ward and Maternity Unit as well as a purpose-built regional Cancer Care Centre and sub-acute Mental Health Unit. Shoalhaven Hospital is currently undergoing a $438 million redevelopment.

What you'll be doing
 

The primary purpose of a Career Medical Officer is to provide high quality care to patients in a complex clinical  
environment. The CMO will deliver direct patient care and supervise junior medical staff in managing patients  
attending Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital (SDMH) Emergency Department. The CMO will ensure the provision  
of on-site experienced medical management to patients under the supervision of on-site and on-call Consultant  
Emergency Physicians. 



Medical Officers will work under an appropriate level of supervision according to their level of competence to evaluate,  
diagnose, treat and provide consultation to patients of all ages presenting in any condition and will work in a variety of  
outpatient settings. The CMO will participate in a seven day per week roster (inclusive of day, evening and night  
shifts) and it is expected that when working nights the CMO will function as Night In Charge. 



The Medical Officer is a key person who works closely with all members of staff and must work as part of and  
contribute to a multi-disciplinary team, deal with matters of an urgent and sensitive nature, exercising discretion,  
sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality. The CMO will work co-operatively within a team environment and actively  
contribute to team activities including proactively participating in team meetings and decision making processes. 



Being a mixed rural ED, Shoalhaven is perfect for developing skills and independence in a safe and  
supported environment. We offer supervision for the Emergency Medicine Certificate/Diploma and we are  
accredited by ACEM, RACGP, ACRRM. 
 
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia, Applicants will need General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia or at least level 3 supervision on limited or provisional registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Extensive clinical experience in Emergency Medicine
  3. Aus/NZ/Competent Authority: Completion of a minimum of 5 post graduate years and working in an acute hospital setting with a minimum of 12 months in an Australian Emergency Department as a Trainee or Career Medical Officer. Standard Pathway Applicants: completion of a minimum of 6 post graduate years and working in an acute hospital setting with a minimum of 2 years in an Australian Emergency Department working as a Trainee or Career Medical Officer.
  4. Advanced Resuscitation Skills for both Adult and Paediatric Emergency medicine including Rapid Sequence Endotracheal Intubation and familiarity of Invasive and non-invasive ventilation
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise
  6. Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team
  7. Demonstrated high level verbal and written communication skills
  8. Demonstrated experience and willingness to participate in clinical governance activities to ensure a clinically safe environment
