Newcastle Community Mental Health Service, located on the historic James Fletcher Hospital site, delivers high-quality, recovery-focused care to the local community.

About the Role

Working under the supervision of a qualified Occupational Therapist, you will play a key role in supporting consumers to build independence, confidence and everyday living skills.

You will:

  • Assist in planning and implementing individual and group-based rehabilitation programs
  • Support consumers with ADLs, community access and structured therapeutic activities
  • Facilitate and co-facilitate group programs that promote recovery and engagement
  • Deliver recreational and living skills activities that enhance wellbeing and quality of life
  • Contribute to program preparation, resource development and maintenance of therapy spaces
  • Provide clear and timely feedback to the supervising Occupational Therapist and broader team

This role suits someone who thrives in a busy community mental health setting and enjoys balancing hands-on clinical support with program coordination and teamwork.


About You

You are organised, proactive and genuinely passionate about supporting people experiencing mental health challenges.

You bring:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Confidence in motivating and engaging consumers with varying levels of mood and participation
  • Sound time management skills and the ability to prioritise competing tasks
  • Experience (or strong interest) in delivering therapeutic, vocational or leisure-based activities

Relevant qualifications and classification will be in line with the NSW Health Allied Health Assistants Award.

Requirements

  1.  To meet the requirements for Level 2: demonstrated experience working as an Allied Health Assistant, Level 1 for a period of 12 months or more and / or Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance (or equivalent qualification).

  2. If applicant is unable to demonstrate these requirements, applicant will commence service at Level 1.

  3. If applicant has completed a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance they will be classified as an Allied  Health Assistant Level 3.

  4. Eligible to drive in NSW.

  1. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and cooperatively with health professionals in a multidisciplinary team environment

  2. Ability to prioritise workload, meet deadlines and complete activities (including ability to work within scope of practice and seek assistance when required) as delegated by supervising Allied Health Professional

  3. Experience planning and implementing living skills, vocational and leisure activities for the identified consumer group.

  4. Ability to communicate with and motivate consumers presenting with mental health concerns.

  • An eligibility list will be created for future permanent full or part time and temporary full or part time vacancies.
  • This position is full time; however, part time/job share arrangements may also be considered.
  • To be eligible for permanent employment in this position you must be an Australian Citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia, or a New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand Passport.
