Nephrology: a speciality with a purpose
Nephrology is a complex and interesting specialty, with a broad variety of clinical conditions and wide range of medical practice – from specialist to generalist, from management of acutely affected patients to a long-term holistic care. Its complexity is not only charming but well respected in internal medicine.
Nephrology provides an intellectually stimulating and challenging working environment. It is defined by the care of patients with diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract. It is comprised of several significant components including general medicine, basic science, clinical research and teaching, as well as the clinical areas of transplantation, dialysis, hypertension, obstetric medicine, and an opportunity for procedural work.
The NSW/ACT Nephrology Advanced Training Program offers three year appointments for trainees within three distinct training networks with the opportunity to preference your preferred networks. Individual training needs to meet training requirements of the College of Physicians, as well as trainee interests, are considered when allocating terms to offer an individualised program for each of the network’s trainees.

The NSW/ACT Nephrology Advanced network structures ensure trainees have access to more training opportunities across NSW/ACT and provide a superior training experience in line with college requirements.
The Hunter-Western-ACT Network (HWA), comprises of Westmead, Nepean and Blacktown hospitals as part of the Western Sydney Renal Service, the John Hunter Hospital and the Canberra Renal Health Service and offers a comprehensive, diverse, state of the art nephrology clinical training in areas of transplantation, dialysis, renal supportive care, obstetrics medicine, renal genetics, metabolic bone disease, transition care (paediatrics to adult care), rural and regional nephrology. Westmead hospital is the largest kidney pancreas and islet transplant program in Australia. In addition to the clinical activity, the network provides opportunities for research through the Westmead Institute of Medical Research, Centre for Kidney Research/BEAT-CKD Consortium, Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and the ACT’S center for Health and Medical Research. Opportunities exist for involvement in these research activities both during the course of the transplant rotation and at a postgraduate level. Individual training needs to meet training requirements of the College of Physicians, as well as trainee interests, are considered when allocating terms to offer an individualised program for each of the network’s trainees.
The East Coast New England Renal Network (ECNE) offers a broad range of nephrology experience. Trainees will be rotated through 6 monthly terms across several different hospitals within Sydney and across NSW: St George Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, Royal North Shore Hospital, Wollongong Hospital, Gosford Hospital and Tamworth Hospital. Each of these hospitals provide excellent teaching and extensive opportunities for managing inpatient and outpatient care in general nephrology, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis and collectively they provide exposure to acute and chronic transplant care, renal diseases of pregnancy, renal supportive care, renal stone disease, and interventional nephrology. Individual training needs to meet training requirements of the College of Physicians, as well as trainee interests, are considered when allocating terms to offer an individualised program for each of the network’s trainees.
The Central South West Regional Renal Network (CSWR) is composed of facilities including Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Liverpool Hospital as well as other major Sydney Metropolitan hospitals (Concord, St Vincent’s, Campbelltown, and Bankstown) and rural terms at Dubbo Hospital, in Central NSW and Lismore in Northern NSW. A comprehensive training experience is offered in all renal sub-speciality areas within the CSWRN including; obstetric medicine, outpatient dialysis including home-based therapies, renal supportive care, interventional nephrology, renal genetics and acute renal transplantation. The acute renal transplant unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is amongst the largest in Australia. The breadth of facilities within CSWRN means that all sub interest areas of renal medicine are available within the network and the training program can be tailored to a trainee’s individual interests and requirements. Rural outreach clinics are also included in some terms where the registrar, under consultant supervision, provides a fly-in fly-out renal service to an area of rural NSW. What you'll be doing
In Nephrology, you will train under supervision and prepare for independent practice as a consultant. The program builds your skills through work-based learning and assessment tools.
At the end of your training program you will be adept to:
- independently deliver a health service provision and demonstrate a practical understanding of renal diseases/conditions, renal replacement therapies and transplantation
- recognise the impact of chronic kidney disease on individuals, family groups and society
- describe the particular needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Maori and Pacific Islander peoples of Australia and New Zealand
- show an awareness of, and sensitivity to, the special needs of patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
- work within, and fully use multidisciplinary team-based approaches to the assessment, management and care of patients
- understand the importance of independent research and ongoing education and training
- be equipped with the skills required to develop independent research projects
- implement future career planning and decision making processes based on a more informed level of knowledge and understanding.
- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Completion of at least four postgraduate years and successful completion of the examination requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and be eligible to undertake subspecialty training in Nephrology in Australia.
- Demonstrate ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
- Good communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise problems and tasks.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Ability to move between services and geographical locations to deliver patient care.
- Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
