Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Advanced Trainee in Gastroenterology to join the Department at Concord Hospital for an 8 month Contract.
What you'll be doing
The Advanced Trainee is responsible for inpatient care, endoscopy lists, ambulatory care clinics, quality and safety meetings, weekly journal club and weekly clinical, radiology and pathology meetings. During training in gastroenterology and hepatology, the Advanced Trainee will have various responsibilities including managing general gastroenterology and hepatology inpatients, consultations and assessing all new referrals within 24 hours or less if required.
You will also attend regular general gastroenterology and hepatology out-patient clinics, subspecialty clinics, where applicable (eg- viral hepatology clinics, inflammatory bowel disease clinics, nutrition clinics, neurophysiology/motility clinics, infusion/rapid triage clinics).
Participation in on call rosters will be determined by the Head of Department. First on call roster to the emergency department and ward patients after hours for new admissions and complications in ward patients.
There will be weekend ward rounds of general gastroenterology and transplant patients when on call. You will also organise inter-hospital transfer of patients with complex gastrointestinal problems from regional centres, where applicable.
The role also involves supervision of junior medical staff.
This is an opportunity to gain competency in endoscopy and colonoscopy by attending regular endoscopy lists and colonoscopy lists and organise and perform emergency endoscopic procedures for acute upper GI bleeding.
The Advanced Trainee is required to assist and participate in the development and implementation of Quality Activities, ensure timely discharge and will have responsibility for discharge coding.
The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department
The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is one of the largest and busiest clinical departments at Concord Hospital. It provides a comprehensive in-patient, consultative and ambulatory gastroenterology service within the hospital and also to the wider community in the Inner West of Sydney.
The Ambulatory Care and Endoscopy Unit (ACE) houses ambulatory clinics, C13 breath testing facilities, oesophageal manometry and up to four endoscopy procedure rooms with recovery areas. Almost 6000 endoscopic procedures are performed each year making the unit one of the busiest endoscopy units in NSW. ACE also houses clinics in general gastroenterology, hepatology and IBD clinics. There are also colorectal clinics, incontinence clinics and stomal therapy services, which is run by the Colorectal Surgical Department.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy
Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP)
Diagnostic and Interventional Endoscopic ultrasound
Enteroscopy
Argon Plasma Coagulation and Laser therapy
Capsule endoscopy
Ambulatory oesophageal pH monitoring
Oesophageal manometry
Hydrogen breath testing
C13 breath testing for H pylori
Ambulatory Liver Clinic
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- At least 1 core year of advanced training in Gastroenterology. Successful completion of the examination requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and eligible to undertake subspecialty training in Gastroenterology in Australia.
- Excellent theoretical knowledge and clinical judgement.
- Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
- Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education, quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Demonstrated involvement in teaching and commitment to ongoing education and research.
