Palliative Medicine Advanced Trainee

This is an opportunity to work as an Advanced Training in Palliative Medicine within a specialist palliative care service at Westmead Hospital. The Advanced Trainee in Palliative Medicine will provide quality Supportive and Palliative healthcare to patients, under supervision, while developing a broad knowledge of the principles and practice of palliative medicine. This position will have supervision from specialist medical staff whilst undertaking learning and professional development as outlined by the Chapter of Palliative Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Westmead Hospital is one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts - Western Sydney Local Health District which provides district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. WSLHD is one of the most cultural and socioeconomically diverse districts in Australia.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in Westmead Hospital’s Supportive and Palliative Medicine Consultation Service. The WSLHD Supportive and Palliative Care Service consists of a high functioning team of specialist physicians, nurses, physical and psychosocial allied health specialists, aboriginal and cultural palliative care health workers, pastoral care workers, community nurses and volunteers working in various sectors including: 
•    Acute Inpatients facilities: Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals with inpatient and busy consultation services,
•    subacute specialist inpatient units (Auburn and Mt Druitt PCU,)
•    WSLHD Integrated and Community Health Supportive Care Nursing Service
•    Residential Aged Care Specialist Palliative Care In reach service.
•    Specialist Supportive Care services (Renal and Cardiology)

What you'll be doing
•    The Trainee will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team which includes Senior and junior medical, nursing and allied health professionals delivering holistic care to patients and their families, in the setting of life limiting illness with complexity of symptoms and/or End of Life Care needs. They will have the opportunity to develop their skills in assessing and managing the physical and psychosocial of symptoms, and complications of life limiting illnesses and Palliative Care emergencies, and in communication with patients and families in this setting.
•    The Trainee will be conducting consults in the wider Westmead Hospital inpatient population with a JMO for whom they will provide support and supervision, attend rounds with the Senior Medical Officers, and attend assist with a weekly outpatient clinic.
•    The Trainee must work effectively within the Supportive and Palliative care MDT to ensure delivery of  holistic Care to our patients and their families, and also interact professionally with clinicians outside of the hospital, including GP’s and community nurses.
•    The Trainee will participate in an on-call weekend roster of 1:4 or less across the LHD well supported by the Senior Physicians in the service.
•    The Trainee is directly responsible to the supervising Supportive and Palliative Medicine Specialists attending Westmead Hospital and through them to the WSLHD Director of Supportive and Palliative Medicine. 
•     The term has accreditation from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as a Palliative Medicine Consults term or as a Cancer Care Term for Palliative Medicine Trainees. If the trainee is completing the Cancer Care Term, then their outpatient clinic will be within the Medical Oncology Service.

The Training Program & Opportunities
The successful applicant will attend the weekly education program with other advanced trainees in the LHD, and may remotely attend Grand Rounds at Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals via MS teams/zoom, and other educational meetings as they arise. There will be opportunities to contribute to Quality Assurance activities, as well as various research opportunities.
 
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. RACP advanced trainees (Palliative Medicine and other subspecialties), Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine trainees, Clin. Foundations in Palliative Medicine (RACP) trainees, Faculty of Pain Medicine trainees and Family Medicine Program trainees or as detailed under Qualifications above
  3. Completed at least four years residency since graduation
  4. Current Drivers license
  5. Proven satisfactory clinical performance, supported by submissions of two current referees
  6. Demonstrated sound, effective communication skills with patients, medical and surgical colleagues and other staff
  7. Demonstrated commitment to own personal and professional development
  8. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after- hours overtime and on-call rosters and the required rotations both between services and geographical location to deliver patient care (including rural locations if applicable to the stream)
