Our Department of Ophthalmology

Prince of Wales Hospital offers one of Australia's leading ophthalmology vocational training programs for junior medical officers who wish to qualify as a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and to practice as a RANZCO qualified specialist ophthalmologist.

Our goal is to develop world-class ophthalmologists, with outstanding technical and clinical knowledge, surgical skillset and experience to deliver exceptional ophthalmic patient care.

Our Training Program offers:

  • High levels of supervision and teaching by experienced Consultants.
  • Practical experience in a broad range of general and subspeciality ophthalmic surgeries and clinical cases. Our subspecialties include: Cornea, Retina, Paediatrics/strabismus, Oculoplastics, Glaucom, Neuro-Ophthalmololgy, and Cataract.
  • Regular didactic learning opportunities (including Eye School), as well as generous study/examination support and preparation.

Trainees who undertake our program have extensive opportunities to develop their ophthalmic technical knowledge, skillset, surgical techniques and surgical acumen.

What you'll be doing

The Advanced Trainee in Ophthalmology provides excellent clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings and provide effective clinical management of patients, with opportunities to perform operating lists under appropriate supervision, patient assessment, treatment planning, performing procedures and maintaining adequate medical records; and to develop expertise in ophthalmic practice, in a complex clinical environment. This includes supervised ophthalmic medical management of patients admitted to the ophthalmology department. 

The Advanced Trainee is also responsible for the supervision of other ophthalmology trainees and Junior Medical Officers.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Satisfactorily completed 4 years of accredited Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZO) training.
  3. Successful completion of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists RACE and Pathology exams or eligible to sit and working towards completing the exams.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
  5. Demonstrated high level communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience
  6. Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  8. Demonstrated high level independent clinical skills and judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions and problem solve with an awareness of limitations and ability to learn independently and modify behaviour accordingly.
