Advanced Trainee - Emergency & Retrieval Medicine
Lismore Base Hospital and Richmond Network

An exciting opportunity is available at Lismore Base Hospital for an Emergency Medicine Advanced Trainee (Stage 2-4) position at the Lismore Base Hospital and its peripheral sites (Ballina and Casino Hospitals). The successful applicants will gain valuable experience in our hospital in the beautiful Northern NSW LHD / Richmond Network, working under the guidance of highly experienced senior clinicians as part of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine’s (ACEM) training program.
 

This position also includes a rare opportunity to work in our retrieval medicine department for the second six months of the clinical year (from August 2026).
 

The Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) Emergency Department (ED) sees over 41,000 adult and paediatric presentations per year and is a regional trauma centre. The department includes modern facilities such as a 4 bed resuscitation and procedure bay, acute zone, an ED short stay unit (EDSSU), fast tract and medical imaging services. LBH ED also supports Richmond Network hospitals including Ballina District Hospital and Casino Memorial District Hospital, and Multipurpose Centres located at Kyogle, Nimbin, Urbenville and Bonalbo. 
 

Accreditation: Lismore Base Hospital (Richmond Network) is accredited for 36 months of Trainee Stage 1-3 time, 6 months Trainee Stage 4 (Lismore ED), and 6 months Trainee Stage 4 (non-ED Retrieval) or 3 months Trainee Stage 4 non-ED Medical Education. Our department offers opportunities to rotate to ACEM accredited terms in Anaesthetics, ICU, Medical Education, Ultrasound and Retrieval. 
Training Stage 4 (TS4): Trainees will have the opportunities to fulfil leadership roles within the department whilst having access to supervision and support from FACEMs. TS4 trainees will contribute to a range of education activities within Emergency Medicine and the hospital. Trainees will be provided non clinical time to undertake education, quality assurance and quality improvement activities. 
Education: We offer weekly paid protected education sessions including simulation, clinical skills, case reviews, radiology, and paediatrics. Additional structured programs are offered to trainees preparing for ACEM primary and fellowship exams. LBH also supports trainees with funding external education activities including Alfred Health Emergency Procedures Course and ACEM Diploma of Pre Hospital and Retrieval Medicine. 


Where you'll be working
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.

The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. LBH ED also supports Richmond Network hospitals including Ballina District Hospital (18,000 presentations per annum) and Casino Memorial District Hospital (14,000 presentations per annum), and Multipurpose Centres located at Kyogle, Nimbin, Urbenville and Bonalbo.

LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. What you'll be doing
 

The primary purpose of the Advanced Trainee (AT) in Emergency Medicine is to provide high quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED), supporting services in ED with medical input under the guidance of Emergency Physicians and other Senior Medical Officers on call. 

Trainees undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with their colleagues when appropriate. Advanced Trainees work under a level of supervision according to their competence in the following activities: 
 

  • Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, assessment, management, and discharge planning of patients
  • Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care
  • Communicating with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans
  • Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical specialists
     
  • Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community based care modalities for optimal post discharge care 

The ED Advanced Trainee position will be based in NNSWLHD Emergency Medicine departments, with potential opportunities to rotate through terms in ICU, Paediatrics, Medicine, Retrieval and Anaesthetics as part of the ED training program and dependent on location within the LHD. 
 

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role (please address these in your response).
  2. Demonstrated ability to work with appropriate independence, commensurate with a level of a Specialist Trainee, within a supervised complex clinical environment.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
  4. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and others members of the health care team.
  5. Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self education.
  8. Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
