Immunology and Allergy/ Immunopathology- Advanced Trainee


These positions are accredited for Advanced Training in Clinical Immunology and Allergy (RACP) and/or Immunopathology (RCPA) Network information:

Six training positions (four clinical positions and two laboratory-based) exist in a network of Hospitals in Sydney that together cover the spectrum of diseases encompassed in the disciplines of Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology.  The positions are suitable for Advanced Training in Clinical Immunology (Royal Australian College of Physicians, RACP), Advanced Training in Immunopathology (Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, RCPA), or for trainees in the joint program of both Colleges. 

The clinical positions involve inpatient and outpatient management of patients with immunological disorders, and interdepartmental consultations including management of:

  • Autoimmune and inflammatory disorders
  • Immunosuppression
  • Allergy and anaphylaxis
  • Vasculitis
  • Primary and secondary immunodeficiency
  • Recurrent infections
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Drug and Anaesthetic allergies and reactions
  • Clinical immunopathology   
  • Neuroimmunology
  • Oral Immunology

The laboratory positions involve rotations in NSW Health Pathology Immunology Laboratories at Royal Prince Alfred and/or Liverpool Hospitals, including exposure to the performance and reporting of autoantibody assays, immunochemistry analyses, analyses of cellular immunology and allergy testing as well as laboratory management and communication with and notification of results to requesting physicians. 

Trainees in the program participate in network-wide teaching, supervision, research projects, ongoing education and clinical and laboratory quality assurance programs. 

The rotations are accredited for training in Clinical Immunology and Allergy and Immunopathology by the RACP and the RCPA, respectively, and form part of the network between Campbelltown Hospital, Concord Hospital, Liverpool Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals.

Successful applicants will be offered 3-year contracts or a contract until the end of their training requirements. This means not all 6 positions are available every year.  



  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. At least four postgraduate years and successful completion of the RACP Divisional Clinical Exam.
  3. Demonstrated career interest in Clinical Immunology.
  4. Demonstrated teamwork within a multidisciplinary team, time management and problem solving skills in a complex clinical environment.
  5. Demonstrated interest in teaching and research.
  6. Demonstrated interest in ongoing education and clinical quality.
  7. Be willing to rotate throughout Sydney & South Western Sydney Local Health Districts.
