Role: Advanced Trainee (3rd Year) - Cardiology
This position is for a Trainee who will be in their 3rd year of Advanced Cardiology Training in 2026 with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). The position will involve core cardiology duties as well as participation in after-hours trainee on call. The position is held between the Prince of Wales Hospital and The Sutherland Hospital. This position provides the Advanced Trainee with a very wide range of cardiology experience, working with very experienced Cardiologists in different environments.

Prince of Wales Hospital and Community Health Services is a major teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre, providing excellent healthcare to south-eastern Sydney and specialist health and medical services to NSW.

Each year we care for more than 60,000 patients in our Emergency Department and around 50,000 patients are admitted to the inpatient units of our hospital. What you'll be doing
The Advanced Trainee will provide effective clinical management of patients, working under the supervision of Specialist Cardiologists to care for patients presenting or referred with potential cardiac disease, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The role includes patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures, maintaining adequate medical records, organising and interpreting appropriate investigations.
The Advanced Trainee will medically manage conditions such as acute and chronic coronary disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease including endocarditis, and hypertension, with initial management of arrhythmias and pericardial disease, basic adult congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension, and prevention of heart disease; and undertake supervised general medical management of patients admitted to the Cardiology department.
The Advanced Trainee will undertake dedicated terms for procedures including coronary angiography, echocardiography, electrophysiology and other procedural and clinical aspects relevant to Cardiology.
The doctor is a key person who works closely with all members of staff and must:
- Work as part of and contribute to a multi-disciplinary team.
- Deal with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature.
- Must have the ability to exercise discretion, sensitivity and maintain confidentiality.
- Work co-operatively within a team environment and actively contribute to team activities including pro-actively participating in team meetings and decision-making processes.
- The advanced trainee will be expected to make independent decisions on patient care. They will duly consult with the responsible consultant Cardiologist in a timely manner, according to the clinical urgency.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Completion of two years of advanced training in Cardiology with RACP and entering 3rd year of Advanced Cardiology training.
- Demonstrates commitment to ongoing Advanced Training education, excellent theoretical knowledge and clinical judgement, research and teaching in Cardiology with a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
- Demonstrates ability to provide empathetic and expert clinical care.
- Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team - diligence, punctuality, organization, record keeping, time management, problem solving skills, teamwork.
- Demonstrates excellent communication (verbal and written) with patients, their families, medical and nonmedical colleagues.
- Commitment to continuous quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Proficient in performing and reporting transthoracic echocardiograms and diagnostic coronary angiograms. Appropriate logbook and excellent appraisals under two years approved advanced training in Cardiology with the RACP.
