Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Advanced Trainee to join the Medical Oncology team.


What you will be doing:

This position is suitable for medical officers who are interested in training in medical oncology services. The Medical Oncology Advanced Trainee will be in an accredited Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) training program within the Medical Oncology Department in a network of hospitals (Chris O`Brien Lifehouse 3 days per week, and Dubbo base hospital 2 days per week) The Advanced Trainee will be assigned to the Medical Oncology Department for the specified term and will undertake specific tasks and responsibilities at that Hospital. The main role is to provide clinical care to medical oncology outpatients under the supervision of Attending Medical Officers (AMOs). The Advanced Trainee will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise junior medical officers (JMOs) and medical students. It is also expected that the Advanced Trainee participates in the clinical meetings and teaching and be subject to training and performance reviews.

You will attend and participate in outpatient clinics and training courses. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and other clinical meetings, as well as be involved in departmental quality assurance activities.

• Management of outpatients with common malignant diseases, and discussion of their case at multi-disciplinary meeting at Dubbo and Chris O`Brien Lifehouse.
• Management of outpatients with rare malignancies, including development and adherence with assessment and management plans, ongoing reviews at MDTs, and appropriate communication between specialists at different geographical sites.
• Inpatient consultations at Dubbo Base Hospital, Chris O`Brien Lifehouse and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
• Development and participation in regular telehealth consultations, and outreach clinics beyond Dubbo.
• Triage and development of appropriate management plans for newly presenting rural patients, in collaboration with the rural nurse coordinator, local GPs, counsellor, and supervising oncologist.
• Institution, coordination and chairing of the weekly Dubbo oncology unit multi-disciplinary meetings involving clinicians in Dubbo, Orange and Lifehouse; participation in tumour-specific MDTs at Lifehouse.
• Clinical trials: Participation in regular Lifehouse clinical trials clinics, appointment as a sub-investigator on relevant clinical trials, and involvement in regulatory aspects of clinical trials.
• Training to junior medical officers and medical students.
• Conduct of a research project relating to rural health services research.
• Participation in educational activities conducted by the Sydney LHD medical oncology network.
• Participation in on-call roster at Chris O`Brien Lifehouse.

The Department of Medical Oncology

The medical oncology unit at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse is supported by the biggest clinical trials facility in New South Wales. We take a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, bringing together a concentration of expertise, including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

Where you will be working:

The Sydney Local Health District employs Trainees (both unaccredited and College accredited trainees) to work in the Department of Medical Oncology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The department is located within and managed by Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, a private not-for-profit institution co-located with RPA. You will also work at Dubbo Base Hospital 2 days per week.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Experience as a medical officer in a rural hospital, preferably with experience in a rural oncology unit (desirable but not essential).
  3. 12 months experience as an advanced trainee in medical oncology (desirable but not essential).
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. Successfully completed the FRACP written and clinical examinations.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team.
  7. Demonstrated experience in research studies and teaching.
  8. Minimum 3 years of postgraduate experience.
