Position TitleAdolescent Forensic Mental Health –  Community Integration Team - Aboriginal Identified (HP3/CNS2/PSYCH) - Tamworth Justice Health - PFT

This is a position identified for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people on the basis of a genuine occupational qualification under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants must demonstrate Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status in addition to addressing the selection criteria.

We are Just the Place to grow your career and be part of a valued team delivering care where it’s needed most. Justice Health NSW is a state-wide, Board-governed Specialty Network delivering healthcare services to adults and young people who come into contact with, or who are at risk of coming into contact with, the criminal justice system. Our services operate across secure inpatient, custodial, court and community settings.

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Senior Early Intervention Clinician to join our Adolescent Forensic Mental Health – Early Intervention Team, supporting two evidence-informed, state-wide initiatives: School-Link and Teen Got It!

This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of mental health, education, families and justice, delivering early intervention programs that support vulnerable young people and reduce the likelihood of ongoing mental health challenges and justice system involvement.

The Role

This position is an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team and addresses the health needs of young people released from custody to transition to the community. It focuses on culturally safe, trauma-informed care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth with mental health and/or substance use needs.

Key responsibilities include:

- Coordinates culturally safe, trauma-informed care for young people transitioning from custody, with a focus on mental health and substance use needs. Builds and sustains strong partnerships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS), community mental health, drug and alcohol services, GPs, NGOs, and youth organisations to ensure continuity of care and assertive follow-up.
- Delivers comprehensive mental health assessments and developmentally appropriate interventions, including motivational interviewing, psychoeducation, and solution-focused therapy. Applies Recovery-Oriented principles and recognises the importance of a secure cultural identity as a protective factor for mental health and wellbeing, supporting engagement with culturally appropriate services.
- Supports families and carers by enhancing health literacy, identifying the impact of mental health and substance use on the family unit, and facilitating early intervention. Promotes self-determination and assists young people and their families in building culturally responsive community supports.
- Provides clinical education and referral advice to Justice Health NSW, Youth Justice NSW staff and other stakeholders, advocating for culturally responsive care and facilitating engagement with Aboriginal services. Collaborates with the Aboriginal Mental Health Clinical Leader to ensure care plans reflect cultural strengths, identity, and community connection.
- Contributes to service quality through data collection, outcome measurement, and monthly reporting, including CHIME documentation and client/carer feedback. Participates in service evaluation, research, and continuous improvement initiatives that reflect the cultural needs of young people.
- Identifies emerging needs and contributes to service development and planning, incorporating feedback from young people and families.
- Provides supervision, mentoring, and leads specific projects or tasks to strengthen clinical practice and workforce capability. This is a senior clinical role requiring strong leadership capability, advanced clinical expertise, and the ability to work autonomously within a brief, early-intervention model of care.
