What you'll be doing

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land we live and work on.

The Safeguards Aboriginal Mental Health Clinician (AMHC) will provide high quality evidence based clinical services including assessment, care co-ordination, intervention, liaison and clinical review as part of a multidisciplinary team for children, adolescents and young people (0-17 years) referred to Safeguards with a mental illness or disorder.

Safeguards is a specific multi-disciplinary program within community mental health providing early and brief crisis interventions for children, adolescents and young people (0-17) experiencing acute mental health distress. The Safeguards AMHC, works within the multidisciplinary team and in partnership with other government and non-government community based service providers to deliver flexible, brief and systemic evidence-based interventions. Such interventions may include individual, family, parenting and group therapy. Interventions may be delivered in collaboration with wider community support systems such as Department of Education and Department of Communities and Justice with an aim to facilitate timely and equitable access to treatment. These interventions will be based on an appropriate model of practice as specified by the successful applicants professional discipline, background, skills, and experience and will be informed by evidence-based practice to promote culturally responsive care.

This position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only in accordance with Clause 26 of the Government Sector Employment Rules 2014, applicants must demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the selection criterion. 

 
All NSW Health workers are required to have completed an up-to-date course of a COVID-19 vaccine (2 doses) which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

 

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Please provide proof of vaccination if available.

Selection Criteria 

  1. Registered Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Psychologist with AHPRA registration, or Social Worker with eligibility for the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) with the ability to demonstrate a practical application of the AASW Code of Ethics, or having completed the Djirruwang Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health).
  2. Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Anti-discrimination Act).
  3. Experience in providing mental health assessments and identifying and managing risk with children, adolescents and youth populations.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team..
  5. Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including computer literacy.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including knowledge of the ‘NSW Aboriginal Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2020-2025’, and , NSW Mental Health Act (2007) and related legislation and policies.
  7. Current knowledge of the social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, drug and alcohol issues and intergenerational trauma faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families, and communities.
  8. Current NSW drivers license without restriction.
