About the Role

The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator will ensure the care journey for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers are able to access Aboriginal Community Mental Health services that holistic, culturally safe, trauma informed and evidence based.  

The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator will support the development of services and processes between the Community Mental Health service and non-government, primary care, social support, justice and drug and alcohol services to ensure collaboration, connectivity, reduce service duplication and ensure appropriate support at transitional points in care for Aboriginal people.

Ideal Candidate

  • To be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14(d) of the Anti-discrimination Act 1977, NSW) and have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures with established links with the local communities.
  • Tertiary qualification Bachelor Health Science (Mental Health), or qualifications and current registration with AHPRA for Registered Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, or eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers for Social Workers. Registered nurse with minimum 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues faced for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; with experience in mental health and/or social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities.
  • Experience in Case Management and developing and reviewing consumer centred support plans.
