The Primary Care and Community Health Unit consists of 9 centres that provide a range of services for children, young people and their families, adults, older people and their carers. Our services range from health promotion, prevention and early detection through to assessment, treatment and continuing care. Our staff work in partnership with schools, GPs, hospitals, non-government agencies and other organisations to provide care across our centres, in people’s homes, other community venues as well as virtual care (telehealth).
We are seeking an Aboriginal Family Health Worker to support the Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Service (AMIHS) and Building Strong Foundations (BSF) programs in Penrith. This role works closely with a multidisciplinary team and the local community to deliver culturally responsive care that supports the health and development of Aboriginal children from pregnancy to school age.
The position builds trust with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, promotes health and parenting support, raises awareness of pregnancy and child development, and strengthens connections between health services, Aboriginal organisations, and government agencies to ensure integrated, holistic care.

What you will bring to the role
- Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and female (applicant's race and gender is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 and Section 31 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
- Has undertaken or is willing to undertake a minimum Certificate III Aboriginal Primary Health Care.
- Demonstrated ability to provide cultural brokerage with individuals, families who have young children and communities; cultural guidance for the other members of the team; and, facilitate respectful and culturally safe access for individuals, families and communities.
- Demonstrated understanding of the health and psychosocial issues impacting Aboriginal infants, children and their families.
- Demonstrated understanding of the relevant policy and procedures within the Local Health District and NSW Health that guide the AMIHS/BSF programs.
- Demonstrated experience working with and ability to provide social support for families who have young children in collaboration with multidisciplinary AMIHS/BSF team
- Demonstrated written, oral communication and computer skills and demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team.
- Current driver's licence and willingness to use for work purposes. This may include driving long distances across the LHD.
