Visiting Medical Officer in General Medicine - Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital

The Department of Medicine at Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital is seeking a General Medicine Physician to join a highly skilled and supportive team of locally based specialists in one of Australia’s leading rural referral centres. This is an exciting opportunity to build a rewarding career in a vibrant regional setting while delivering high-quality care to a diverse and growing community.

Based at Tamworth Hospital, you will contribute to comprehensive inpatient and outpatient general medicine services, including participation in the after-hours General Medicine on-call roster (1:8). You will also have the opportunity to establish and provide privately referred outpatient services from your own consulting rooms in Tamworth.

Tamworth Hospital services a catchment population of approximately 205,000 people and is one of the largest and most advanced rural referral hospitals in Australia. Following a $220 million acute services redevelopment completed in 2015, the hospital offers state-of-the-art facilities, expanded clinical services, and a strong commitment to innovation and patient-centred care.

You will join a collegial and collaborative physician group comprising 16 specialists across a broad range of disciplines, including cardiology, nephrology, rheumatology, medical and radiation oncology, haematology, neurology, gastroenterology, rehabilitation medicine, and endocrinology. The department fosters a culture of teamwork, professional growth, and clinical excellence.

Educational and Teaching Opportunities - Tamworth Hospital has a strong academic and teaching focus and is proudly affiliated with the Bachelor of Medicine program at the University of Newcastle and the Joint Medical Program with the University of New England. The hospital supports accredited Basic Physician Training in General Medicine, as well as Advanced Training positions in Cardiology, Nephrology, Medical Oncology, General Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine.

Mandatory requirements of this role include:

  • Admitting, consultative, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient, telehealth and on-call services as determined and required by HNELHD
  • Attendance and availability during rostered work hours and whilst on-call including clinical handover, clinical supervision, teaching and for emergency and routine care as determined and required by HNELHD
  • Provision of education and research as determined and required by HNELHD

 

  1. A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  2. Evidence of being a medical expert, demonstrated by recent and comprehensive experience in General Medicine
  3. Evidence of being a scholar, maintains medical professional development and has the ability to assist other staff, including trainees in the acquisition and development of knowledge.
  4. Evidence of being a skilled communicator, including both oral and written skills, communicating with patients, students, other health professionals and the public.
  5. Evidence of being a collaborator, including the ability to network and operate within an interdisciplinary framework and to work with other stakeholders in a variety of settings.
  6. Evidence of being a manager, including ability to be flexible and cope with a changing health system, past leadership and management experience and previous safety and quality improvement activities.
  7. Evidence of being a professional, including continued professional development, peer review and other forms of clinical governance.
  8. Evidence of being an advocate, including contributions to improving individual and societal health.
