Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) is seeking an experienced Visiting Medical Officer in Cardiothoracic Surgery to join our team at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital!

 

The primary purpose of the role of Visiting Medical Officer in Cardiothoracic Surgery is to provide high quality diagnostic and consultative specialty services in Cardiothoracic Surgery and to participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities within the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department and Hospital as required. 
  
The Visiting Medical Officer in Cardiothoracic Surgery will manage a cardiothoracic workload, along with developing high-level skills in adult cardiac surgery, aortic surgery and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The position is designed for an early career Cardiothoracic Surgeon who will develop, facilitate, implement and evaluate care management plans for trauma patients, and help to optimise theatre list utilisation  by operating on existing theatre lists where a consultant surgeon is unavailable (noting that dedicated theatre sessions will not be assigned at this time unless an existing surgeon relinquishes their sessions). 
  
They will also be involved in unit teaching, surgical training and supervision of junior medical officers, and is expected to participate in clinical audit and quality reviews within the unit and comply with all aspects of clinical governance. The Visiting Medical Officer will participate in the on-call roster covering all aspects of Cardiothoracic Surgery, including ECMO retrieval. 
  
The Visiting Medical Officer will ensure a high standard of professional performance and encouragement of an academic environment which supports education, research and professional development. 

Medical practitioner, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) with recognised qualifications in Cardiothoracic Surgery and/or other equivalent specialist recognition.

 

Position is currently available. In addition, applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within two months from the beginning of the 2026 Clinical Year on 2 February 2026, may be considered.

 

Salary and conditions are in accordance with the NSW Public Hospitals Visiting Medical Officer Determination.
