Where You’ll Be Working

The Mater Mental Health Centre is an Acute inpatient Facility for adults requiring assessment, treatment and care. The successful candidate will be working within the busy Psychiatric Emergency Care centre located in Waratah.

About the Role

This is more than a job—it’s a leadership role in emergency mental health nursing. The Nurse Practitioner / Transitional Nurse Practitioner (NP/TNP) will work autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended nursing clinical role, meeting the clinical demand of the Emergency Department (ED), within their defined and agreed scope of practice and formulary. This role is specifically for the Care of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with a Mental Health condition.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing mental health presentations in ED

  • Leading emergency mental health responses

  • Contributing to clinical leadership, mentoring, and policy development

  • Participating in research, education, and staff development

  • Some consultation liaison work within the broader Mater hospital


You’ll work across a 7-day rotating roster with no nightshifts, shift times between:

  • 8:00am – 4:30pm

  • 10:00am – 6:30pm

  • 12:00pm – 9:30pm

  • 2:30pm – 11:00pm

 

About You

We’re seeking a skilled and confident mental health nurse with advanced clinical knowledge, excellent judgment under pressure, and a passion for improving emergency mental health outcomes.

You’ll bring:

  • A collaborative spirit and leadership mindset

  • Strong clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills

  • Experience working in fast-paced, high-pressure environments

  • A desire to teach, mentor, and lead by example

 

Essential Criteria

  • Current endorsement as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, or working toward endorsement (Transitional Nurse Practitioners welcome – up to 3-year temporary appointment)

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse

  • 3 years’ full-time advanced practice experience in Mental Health (within the past 6 years)

  • Postgraduate qualifications at Master’s level (or currently completing) in an NMBA-approved program

  • Nurse Unit Manager – PECC

  • Clinical Director & Staff Specialist – PES

  • Senior Operational Nurse Manager – who facilitates monthly NP/TNP meetings
