The Hunter New England training network is uniquely placed in many respects. It sits within the same health district, the Hunter New England Health District. As a result of this and the strong ethos focussed on training, promoted by the senior leadership within the training and clinical services, the network offers a supportive, well recognised high quality and reputed psychiatry training program. This aptly complements the psychiatric needs of a large and diverse community by producing and retaining high quality psychiatrists who make Hunter New England their home, including beautiful places to live and work such as Newcastle, the Hunter and Manning Valleys, Armidale, and Tamworth.
There are a wide range of specialities including acute adult, old age, child and adolescent, liaison, neuropsychiatry, drug and alcohol, psychotherapy, rehabilitation and forensic psychiatry. Hunter New England Psychiatry Training network is uniquely placed to offer placements in both tertiary metropolitan and rural settings as it is a large regional network. We also have dedicated education related roles for trainees. The network has over 160 medical staff within the mental health service. The training program runs an accredited weekly academic teaching program linked to the RANZCP Fellowship training program and exam preparation practice sessions. There are robust governance and support structures for trainees. The training program is supported by a Director of Training, Director of Prevocational Training, dedicated Coordinators of Training and Director of Medical Services. The training network is also closely aligned to the University of Newcastle which has a medical school, with our academic psychiatrists based there.

Where you'll be working
The district covers a wide region, with rural and metropolitan areas. The inpatient services operate from 8 different sites, our largest acute hospital based at Newcastle and overall with more than 350 beds. We operate from over 30 community sites. The main sites are based in and around Newcastle with other key sites at Maitland, Morisset, Taree, Tamworth and Armidale.
What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the position is to provide effective psychiatric health services to patients, whilst undertaking
learning and professional development activities in psychiatry.
The position is suitable for doctors (PGY 2 and above) considering a career in psychiatry or wishing to enhance their
mental health skills.
- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Demonstrated empathy and support for patients as well as their families and social networks that draws on a person-centred approach to understand their perspectives, respect their choices and respond helpfully to their needs.
- Demonstrated ability to provide timely, fluent and tailored written and verbal communication that adapts to the needs of a diverse audience, including patient/s, families and carers, and colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and act constructively when faced with high pressure situations or unpredictable environments.
- Demonstrated commitment to developing knowledge and clinical skills through supervision and participation in relevant training and professional development opportunities.
- Ability to initiate, prioritise, consult on and develop plans for the delivery and maintenance of high-quality patient care in a dynamic context with multiple competing priorities.
