This position is designed for Stage 3 Trainees in Child Psychiatry who wish to gain clinical, research and leadership experience as part of their training. This is a 12 month appointment at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW), within The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN), for the 2027 Clinical Year, from 01 February 2027 to 06 February 2028.
The Department of Psychological Medicine provides inpatient, consultation liaison and outpatient services to young people with a wide range of psychiatric conditions. The department has a special commitment to mental health problems in the medically ill, medical problems in people with mental health problems, young people with gender dysphoria, and helping the hospital staff to deliver these services more effectively.
A wide range of treatments are used within the Department, including psychopharmacology, family therapy, and individual psychotherapy. The post also provides the child & adolescent telemedicine psychiatric outreach service (CAPTOS) with weekly videoconferencing clinical assessment services to rural regions with occasional visits (up to 6 working days per year). The Trainee will be expected to contribute to the CAPTOS service after appropriate training. All department members see children with intellectual disability and neuropsychiatric disorders. The department has an eight-bed Acute Inpatient Child Psychiatry Ward in the Children’s Hospital, to treat children and adolescents with acute severe mental health problems.

Selection Criteria:
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Registered with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry as a Stage Three Trainee and currently enrolled or planning to enrol in the Formal Education Course in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NSW Institute of Psychiatry.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals, children, adolescents and families.
- Demonstrated interest in Developmental Psychiatry.
- Demonstrated skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team.
- Adaptability to the differing needs of children, adolescents and their families.
- Demonstrated skills in teaching and a willingness to provide education and supervision to junior staff and students.
- Demonstrated understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research.
