About the Role
As a Tobacco Enforcement Officer, you will lead and participate in the delivery of compliance programs under tobacco control legislation. This includes coordinating and conducting “Sales to Minors” operations, smoke-free environment audits, and point-of-sale inspections. You’ll contribute to the development of a sustainable compliance program, incorporating inspection, monitoring, education, training, evaluation, and legal enforcement.

This role is field-based and requires extensive travel across the Hunter New England region, including multi-day operations and overnight stays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake audits of smoke-free environments and retail premises to ensure compliance with tobacco advertising and display regulations.
  • Support new smoke-free initiatives, such as enforcing smoking prohibitions at public events, transport stops, and outdoor dining areas.
  • Issue Penalty Infringement Notices and conduct seizures in accordance with legislation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external enforcement agencies to deliver joint operations.
  • Contribute to improving service delivery and health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

 

What We’re Looking For

  • A strong background in enforcement, compliance, or regulatory inspection (minimum of 2 years).
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively across the region, including regular overnight stays.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and preparation of legal briefs.
  • Confidence in representing the organisation in legal proceedings.
  • High attention to detail, integrity, and the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of tobacco control legislation and public health enforcement processes.
  • Experience collaborating with Aboriginal communities or delivering culturally appropriate services.
