Staff Specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
John Hunter Hospital

Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) is seeking an experienced and collaborative Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon to join our multidisciplinary team servicing John Hunter Hospital, Belmont District Hospital and Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a tertiary referral service delivering comprehensive plastic and reconstructive care across the district. The successful candidate will play a key role in providing evidence based, patient centred care while contributing to teaching, training, research and service development.

Of particular interest are candidates with experience in DIEP free flap breast reconstruction, who are passionate about advancing reconstructive surgery services within a large and diverse health network. 

About the Role
As a Staff Specialist, you will:

  • Provide contemporary specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery services across HNELHD. 
  • Deliver inpatient, outpatient, consultative, procedural, telehealth and on-call services. 
  • Work collaboratively with Trauma, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Gynaecology, ENT and other specialty services. 
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care and clinical decision making. 
  • Contribute to the education and supervision of junior medical staff, trainees and students.
  • Support quality improvement, clinical governance and patient safety initiatives. 

About You
To be considered for this position, you will have:

  • A primary medical degree registrable in Australia. 
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, or eligibility through an approved overseas specialist pathway.
  • Eligibility for Specialist registration with AHPRA as a Plastic Surgeon.
  • Demonstrated completion of an Australian recognised microsurgical fellowship
  • Experience in DIEP free flap breast reconstruction. 
  • Demonstrated recent and comprehensive experience in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery including Acute Hand Trauma.
