Where you'll be working
Join John Hunter Hospital’s Critical Care Team of Social Workers, playing a vital role in patient and family support during weekends when fewer staff are present, but the hospital remains busy. You will work closely with weekend and afternoon shift staff, After Hours Managers, and Ward In Charge staff, ensuring continuity of care and crisis support across multiple hospital units.
About the role
- Provide crisis social work support across ICU, Birth Suite, Maternity & Gynaecology Wards, and Medical & Surgical Wards (excluding ED and JHCH).
- Collaborate with the Aboriginal Liaison Officer and other rostered staff to respond to patient situations requiring urgent support.
- Assist patients and families experiencing loss, bereavement, distress, and child protection concerns.
- Work every second weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm).
- Maintain weekday connections with the department by working at least one Monday afternoon shift every four weeks (unless already employed in a weekday or afternoon shift role).
About you
We’re looking for a compassionate and highly organised Social Worker who:
- Can effectively prioritise crisis work and guide clinical teams in complex social situations.
- Has experience providing trauma-informed care to patients and families.
- Is confident working with grief, bereavement, and distress in critical care and maternity settings.
- Understands child protection requirements and can liaise with DCJ as needed.
- Thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced hospital environment.
