What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The Senior Resident Medical Officer is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.  

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the Senior Resident Medical Officer’s skills, knowledge and experience. They will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding a patient’s care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  2. Minimum 2 years postgraduate medical experience at the commencement of the post with recent demonstrated surgical experience appropriate to a doctor in the early part of their surgical career.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to pursuing a surgical career with a view to future training with RACS including completion of or preparation for the RACS Surgical Sciences Examination.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
  6. Demonstrated effective teamwork, time management, problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary clinical care team, as well as evidence of advocacy for patients, colleagues and populations.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of and application of key NSW Ministry of Health Policy Directives relevant to inpatient surgical care, and commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  8. Evidence of continued professional development appropriate to an early surgical career JMO, commitment to self-directed education and teaching.
