The Orthopaedic Surgery term at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) and The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) offers junior doctors a unique opportunity to gain broad experience across the spectrum of orthopaedic care, from major adult trauma including hand surgery to complex paediatric musculoskeletal conditions.
Working alongside Orthopaedic Surgeons, Provisional Fellows, SET Trainees and multidisciplinary teams, trainees are actively involved in all aspects of patient care, including emergency presentations, inpatient management, perioperative care, outpatient clinics and operative procedures. The role provides exposure to a diverse range of orthopaedic conditions, including fractures, trauma, sports injuries, elective reconstructive surgery, spinal conditions and paediatric orthopaedic disorders.
At Royal North Shore Hospital, a major trauma centre, trainees gain experience managing acute orthopaedic injuries and complex adult orthopaedic conditions within a busy tertiary referral environment. At The Children's Hospital at Westmead, trainees develop an understanding of paediatric orthopaedics, including congenital conditions, developmental disorders, paediatric trauma and specialised musculoskeletal care.
This combined metropolitan training experience provides a comprehensive foundation in orthopaedic practice while fostering the development of clinical reasoning, surgical knowledge and multidisciplinary teamwork. Trainees benefit from close consultant supervision, structured education programs and opportunities to participate in teaching, research and quality improvement activities.

What you'll be doing
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the SRMO skills, knowledge and experience, all decisions regarding a patient’s care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
The position will consist of 2 rotations. Employment for this position is within the Northern Surgical Skills Network rather than hospital based. Shifts are on a rotating roster. As a part of your employment contract you will be expected to rotate within the following hospitals:
Children’s Hospital Westmead
Royal North Shore Hospital

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases
To be employed by NSW Health, applicants must provide evidence of vaccination and comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive (PD2024_015). Compliance with this policy, including any amendments made from time to time, is a mandatory condition of employment.

This position requires a Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance issued by Service NSW. A current and valid WWCC is a mandatory requirement for appointment to this role.
