The Role

SESLHD Drug & Alcohol Services provides a range of treatment and support services designed to assist individuals, families, and communities managing concerns related to alcohol, prescription, or illicit drug use. Outpatient drug and alcohol (D&A) services are located in clinics at the Langton Centre in Surry Hills, St George Hospital in Kogarah, and Caringbah Community Health Centre at Sutherland Hospital. Inpatient D&A services are provided at Sydney Hospital, Prince of Wales, St. George and Sutherland Hospitals. 
  
SESLHD D&A  is committed to being a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, as well as workers.   Our service is also committed to being a safe space for diverse workers, including those who identify as culturally and linguistically diverse, and those from the LGBTQI+ community. The job provides an opportunity to work closely with community,  strengthen connections and engagement and provide a culturally appropriate service delivery.   
The Senior Aboriginal Health Worker is supported by the Aboriginal Health Unit and is engaged in direct consumer support.

Selection Criteria:

  1. This is a position identified for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people on the basis of a genuine occupational qualification under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  2. A minimum of Certificate III in Drug & Alcohol or equivalent and experience as a health worker / health promotion / community development worker in the government or non-government sector, or willingness to work towards same.
  3. Knowledge of drug and alcohol issues and harm reduction and experience working with vulnerable clients and families with complex health and psycho-social needs in a community setting.
  4. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team with a flexible, eclectic and non-judgmental approach.
  5. High level organisational skills, including a capacity to prioritise competing interests and meet tight deadlines and demonstrated high level written and oral communications skills.
  6. Computer skills, including using Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Teams, Powerpoint and Outlook).
  7. Current driver’s license
