Join the Security Services team at Hunter New England Local Health District and play a vital role in protecting the safety, security and wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors at John Hunter Hospital.
As a Security Officer, you will be part of a professional and supportive team delivering frontline security services across one of New South Wales’ busiest tertiary hospitals. Working across the hospital campus — including the Emergency Department and co-located Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit — you will help create a safe and respectful environment for patients, visitors and healthcare staff.

About the Facility
John Hunter Hospital is the major tertiary teaching hospital and referral centre for the Hunter New England region. Located in the coastal city of Newcastle, the hospital services a diverse population of more than 900,000 people and operates one of the busiest Emergency Departments in New South Wales.
The hospital is also undergoing significant redevelopment as part of the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct project, supporting the future growth of healthcare services across the region.
About the Role
Security Officers are responsible for providing a visible security presence across the hospital campus and responding to requests for assistance from staff, patients and visitors.
The role includes responding to Code Black and duress incidents, supporting staff in managing challenging behaviours using trauma-informed practices, conducting patrols, monitoring security systems and assisting in maintaining a safe hospital environment.
Comprehensive orientation, ongoing support from Senior Security Officers and mandatory PMVA training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver professional frontline customer service to support the safety and security of staff, patients and visitors.
- Respond to Code Black and duress calls using trauma-informed approaches, including assisting with physical restraint under clinical direction where required.
- Provide security support within the Emergency Department and for patients requiring seclusion.
- Conduct internal and external patrols, lock and unlock procedures, public amenity checks and inspections.
- Monitor alarms, CCTV and electronic security systems to ensure timely responses to incidents.
- Control access to buildings and hospital grounds.
- Assist in enforcing NSW Health smoke-free policies.
- Complete security reports, incident documentation and electronic database entries accurately and professionally.
- Identify and report workplace health and safety, fire and security risks.
- Promote workplace behaviours consistent with NSW Health values, cultural respect principles and the HNE Health Values Charter.
- Comply with NSW Health Work Health and Safety policies and procedures.
About You
You will demonstrate:
- Experience working in the security industry with a strong customer service focus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience responding to aggressive or challenging situations with empathy, professionalism and effective de-escalation skills.
- Strong written communication skills, including report writing and electronic record management.
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic healthcare environment.
Essential Requirements
- Current NSW Security Licence 1A.
- Certificate II in Security Operations.
- Current Senior First Aid Certificate.
- Current Class C Driver Licence (NSW eligible).
- Ability to work across a 24/7 rotating roster.
