About the Role

Sydney Local Health District is one of the fastest growing Local Health Districts in New South Wales. Our facilities and services are world class and our staff are dedicated, innovative and caring.

The primary purpose of the Behavioural Escalation Support Team (BEST) clinician position is to deliver and role model behaviour management strategies to support the care of people whose behaviour is negatively impacting the patients’ care and/or safety of other patients and staff. This support is targeting people admitted to acute care facilities (including the Emergency department) with Acute Severe Behavioural Disturbance (ASBD) and other behaviour support needs. In providing this support for patients and staff, the BEST clinician will be assisting to up-skill clinicians caring for patients on strategies to mitigate and manage behavioural disturbances.

The Behavioural Escalation Support Team (BEST) will operate as a 24/7 clinical team, designed to collaborate with clinicians and serve as a liaison, consult and clinical resource for all staff in acute care facilities. BEST clinicians are expected to work across a seven day rotating roster, including morning, evening and night shifts. The BEST team will be available to rapidly respond to patients in emergent behavioural situations or to sit with patients of concern for considerable periods to deescalate ASBD or to implement behaviour management strategies. BEST team members will have the necessary experience and skillset to recognise and respond to the antecedents of acute severe behavioural disturbance and will receive the appropriate training as required. There will also be an opportunity to receive a scholarship for the completion of  Graduate Diploma in the assessment and management of challenging behaviours (currently in development). The BEST team will operate in close partnership with existing clinical services, liaison services and the hospital’s support services.
