Royal North Shore Hospital is a principal tertiary referral hospital for Northern Sydney Local Health District providing a comprehensive range of complex services to patients from across NSW. Royal North Shore Hospital provides specialty services including major trauma, severe burns, spinal cord injuries, neonatal intensive care, bone marrow transplantation, neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology alongside acute medical, surgical, mental health, paediatric, cancer and maternity services. The campus is also home to The Kolling – a medical research institute jointly governed with the University of Sydney

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the position is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The Provisional Fellow is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
The Clinical Provisional Fellow In Acute Gastrointestinal Surgery position aims to provide training for General Surgeons who have an interest in acute general surgery and wishing to further develop skills and experience in managing surgical patients within the scope of an Acute Surgical Unit (ASU) model in a busy tertiary hospital setting.
 
The objectives of this fellowship position include:
To develop an understanding of the principles and practice of acute gastrointestinal surgery as practiced in a tertiary referral center.
To become experienced in the diagnosis and management of common disorders relating to acute gastrointestinal surgery and  gain expertise in surgical techniques associated with acute gastrointestinal surgery.

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  2. Appropriate experience to practice as a Clinical Fellow in Acute Gastrointestinal Surgery.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
  4. Prepared to participate in overtime and on-call work and be involved in the Acute Surgical Unit which includes a 1:8 24 hour on call commitment.
  5. Advanced ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  6. Advanced ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  7. Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  8. Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of General surgery.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases

To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy PD2024_015, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
