What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of this position is to lead the genetics research program within the Heart Centre for Children and Kids Heart Research. The Genetics Lead will conceive, develop, manage and lead genetic research projects and collaborations relating to congenital heart disease (CHD) and other childhood heart disease, contributing significantly towards the research output of Kids Heart Research. In this position, the Genetics Lead will lead, collaborate and provide expert knowledge about the genetics of CHD to clinicians, researchers, national and international collaborators and other stakeholders (patient advocate groups, government agencies, committees etc) as required. Further, the Genetics Lead will supervise, mentor and train junior members and researchers, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students.
In a clinical capacity, the Genetics Lead will play a key role in coordinating the CHD genetics clinic and providing expert knowledge about genetic testing and counselling in childhood heart disease for patients and families of the Heart Centre for Children.
The Genetics Lead will also lead and manage the Kids Heart BioBank, a world-class resource facilitating genetic research into CHD, including ongoing national and international research collaborations and associated day-to-day operations and administrative activities.
- Relevant doctoral qualification with demonstrated extensive research experience. Affiliation with a university, at minimum Level C with a pathway to Level D preferred
- Postgraduate qualification in Genetic Counselling or Part 1 Certification in Genetic Counselling from the Human Genetics Society of Australasia
- Demonstrated extensive knowledge in genetics of congenital heart disease
- Demonstrated leadership, management and accountability of research staff, resources and budgets/funding
- Demonstrated capacity to contribute to original research in congenital heart disease genetics, including a strong track record as demonstrated by published works, presentations at national/international conferences and funding support
- Independent research funding or principal investigator on successful funding applications
- Extensive genetic counselling experience in cardiac disease, preferably congenital heart disease
- Experience in supervising, training and mentoring junior researchers, clinical staff and undergraduate/postgraduate students
