Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD).
The Western Sydney Local Health District Voluntary Assisted Dying Service is set up to provide every aspect of the legislated voluntary assisted dying process for people in WSLHD. The authorised practitioners in the WSLHD Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Service as part of the WSLHD VAD team in conjunction with nurse coordinators and the Medical Lead. The position requires the applicant to act in the role of coordinating, consulting, and administering practitioner.
The practitioner must be a medical practitioner who holds specialist registration, or general registration and has practiced in the medical profession for at least 10 years.
Successful applicants will:
• Provide high quality medical care to patients.
• Ensure a high standard of professional performance acting as VAD coordinating, consulting, and administering practitioners under the NSW Voluntary Assisted Dying Act (2022), and
• Contribute to the program to so that clinicians, services and the public are well-served, and all aspects of the legislation are complied with.
• Be willing to travel across WSLHD to provide aspects of VAD services to patients.
Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration.
Essential Requirements for Appointment
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.
2. Complete approved mandatory training to be recognised as an authorised voluntary assisted dying practitioner in NSW (to be eligible as a coordinating or consulting practitioner, must be a medical practitioner who holds specialist registration, or general registration and has practiced in the medical profession for at least 10 years.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
Selection Criteria
1. Possess registration with the Medical Board of Australia or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable)
2. Sound clinical knowledge in end-of-life care demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position
3. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:
• High level interpersonal and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision
4. Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department.
5. Demonstrated good understanding of the NSW Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022.
6. Sound knowledge of the complex legal, medical, social, and psychological environment in which Voluntary Assisted Dying occupies in NSW Health.
7. Demonstrated clinical ability to carry out the necessary elements of an administering practitioner within the meaning of the VAD Act 2022, including, but not limited to, proficiency in intravenous cannulation.
