Based in our busy General Surgical Ward J3, this position offers the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated multidisciplinary team of nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and support staff. As the first point of contact for patients, families and visitors, you'll help ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the ward while making a positive difference to the patient experience.

 

About the Team

The Surgical Services Unit at John Hunter Hospital is an essential part of our healthcare system, providing administrative and operational support to surgical and perioperative services. Our team culture is supportive, collaborative and focused on delivering outstanding patient care.

Working Monday to Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm, you'll be part of a dynamic environment where teamwork, continuous learning and professional development are highly valued. We encourage staff to take initiative, manage competing priorities and contribute to ongoing improvements across the service.

 

About the Role

As a Ward Clerk, no two days are the same. You will provide essential administrative support to the clinical team while helping patients and families navigate their healthcare journey.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the first point of contact for the ward, responding to phone calls, emails and patient enquiries.
  • Providing support and information to patients and their families with empathy and professionalism.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and preparing documentation for the Clinical Information Department.
  • Coordinating follow-up appointments for patients.
  • Performing accurate data entry into the patient journey board and EPIC system.
  • Collaborating with Nurse Unit Managers, nursing staff, clinicians, allied health professionals, Clinical Support Officers and administrative colleagues.
  • Supporting the efficient operation of the ward through a variety of administrative tasks.

 

About You

Previous administrative and/or customer service experience is preferred but not essential. We welcome applicants who are eager to learn and develop their skills within a healthcare setting.
