Lead the Future of Emergency Care 

Join one of Australia’s busiest and most dynamic Emergency Departments at John Hunter Hospital. Caring for more than 85,000 presentations annually, our Emergency Department is a leading mixed Adult and Paediatric Tertiary Referral Centre and the only Trauma Referral Centre in NSW outside Sydney. 

You will work with a diverse and complex patient cohort, including:

  • Trauma and major orthopaedic presentations
  • Neurosurgical and neurological emergencies, including acute stroke
  • Cardiology and cardiothoracic patients
  • Paediatric and adolescent mental health presentations


With the $835 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct opening in 2026, this is an exciting opportunity to be part of a state-of-the-art Emergency Department designed to redefine patient care and clinical excellence in the Hunter Region.



Practise with Purpose 

As a Nurse Practitioner (NP) / Transitional Nurse Practitioner (TNP), you will function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced clinical role, delivering high-quality, person-centred emergency care.

In this role, you will:

  • Conduct comprehensive and holistic patient assessments
  • Initiate and interpret diagnostic investigations
  • Prescribe medications and implement treatment plans
  • Refer directly to appropriate health care professionals
  • Apply advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making skills
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to support optimal patient outcomes

 

We are seeking a clinician with:

  • Advanced clinical assessment and management skills in Emergency care
  • Strong nursing leadership capability
  • Commitment to research-informed practice and continuous improvement
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to resolve conflict professionally
  • A passion for delivering exceptional, person-centred care in a fast-paced environment


Essential 

  • Current Registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA and current endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner or, if transitional, evidence of substantial progress towards endorsement. If not endorsed, the Transitional Nurse Practitioner will be appointed temporarily (up to 3 years) to work towards endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Post Graduate qualification in Emergency Nursing or evidence of working towards attainment with at least 3 years full time post registration emergency experience.
