About the opportunity
Are you a driven, innovative and curious Research Scientist looking to take the next step in your career? NSW Health Pathology at Liverpool Hospital is seeking a temporary full time Scientist to join its dynamic Immunology Research Team. This Immunology Mass Spectrometry Development role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the cutting edge of analytical science, leading the development, validation and implementation of LC‑MS‑based assays for immunology applications across NSW Health Pathology. You’ll play a key role in growing mass spectrometry capability within Immunology, contributing to impactful translational research and helping shape future clinical diagnostic services.

Based in the modern NSW Health Pathology Immunology Laboratory at Liverpool Hospital, this role is located within the new Integrated Services Building, one of the most advanced pathology facilities in New South Wales. You’ll be part of a highly collaborative and supportive team, working in a bright, well‑equipped environment. The campus is ideally positioned near parks, cafés and Westfield Liverpool, with easy access to Liverpool and Warwick Farm train stations, making it a great place to work, collaborate and thrive.
 


What you'll be doing
To conduct approved Immunology research under the direction of the department head, with a primary focus on developing, validating and implementing advanced LC‑MS–based assays for Immunology applications within NSW Health Pathology. The role involves:

  • Delivering high‑quality analytical support for contract research
  • Establishing and evaluating LC‑HRMS and LC‑MS/MS workflows for plasma cell disorder monitoring
  • Generating robust analytical and clinical evidence to support translational research and inform future diagnostic service development
  • Advancing mass spectrometry capability in Immunology through directed research, including assay development, validation and clinical translation, collaboration with research partners, and adherence to quality and operational standards

  1. Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution
  2. Demonstrated expertise in LC-MS/MS or LC-HRMS method development and optimisation, including demonstrated experience in complex biological sample preparation and analysis.
  3. Proven understanding of analytical validation principles, with the ability to develop, maintain and implement robust LC‑MS workflows, and translate research innovations into clinical applications
  4. Demonstrated experience in the use of mass spectrometry data analysis software and relevant analytical tools for the processing, interpretation, and reporting of complex datasets, with the ability to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and relevance to clinical and research outcomes. Including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Control Systems and computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite
  5. Well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
  6. Proven ability to work in research and/or clinical laboratory environments including demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment while working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory
  7. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  8. Proven ability to maintain high standards of quality, governance and documentation, with sound knowledge of legislative, policy, work health and safety, and privacy requirements relevant to the laboratory environment
