What you'll be doing
The Senior Orthoptist will be required to participate in clinical, educational and administrative activities to provide an efficient and effective orthoptic service to children attending the Eye Clinic at the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN). 

As a senior clinician the Orthoptist possess extensive specialist knowledge within their discipline and will be required to: 
  • Demonstrate advanced reasoning skills and operate autonomously with minimum direct clinical supervision. 
  • Provide clinical services to client groups and circumstances of a complex nature requiring advanced practice skills. This includes orthoptic clinics, ophthalmology clinics, strabismus screening, paediatric contact lenses, triage and ancillary testing. 
  • Apply professional knowledge and judgement when performing novel, complex or critical tasks specific to their discipline. Staff at this level are expected to exercise independent professional judgement when required in solving problems and managing cases where principles, procedures, techniques and methods require expansion, adaptation or modification.
  1. Bachelor of Applied Science (orthoptics) or Post graduate degree in Orthoptics or equivalent which provides eligibility for registration with the Australian Orthoptic Board.
  2. Extensive post graduate clinical experience in the field of paediatric orthoptics, with the ability to work independently and make strong clinical decisions
  3. Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills including the ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, throughout all organisational levels.
  4. Demonstrate an ability to learn subspeciality skills such as the insertion and management of paediatric contact lenses
  5. Demonstrated ability to lead ongoing quality improvement activities
  6. Experience with clinical research and clinical in-service education programs to staff and students
  7. Demonstrated high level organisation and time management skills in an environment of competing clinical/administrative demands
