About the Role

The Harm Reduction Program provides a number of services that aim to reduce the transmission of blood borne viruses. This includes the Needle and Syringe Program, which is an evidence based public health program that provides sterile injecting equipment, peer support and healthcare navigation to people who inject drugs.  Additionally, the Primary Health Care service offers multidisplinary assessment, treatment and referral for vulnerable people including those who inject drugs.  

The Health Promotion Officer will work with the Harm Reduction Program and Drug Health Services (DHS) to develop and implement evidence-based and/or innovative projects designed to: 
 

  • Reduce the harms associated with injecting drug use
  • Encourage people who inject drugs to be screened and undertake treatment for blood borne virus (BBV)
  • To reach marginalised priority population groups
  • Contribute to the clinical redesign of the Harm Reduction Program to increase access to the Primary Health Care Clinic
  • Provide a range of harm reduction interventions for clients of the program, including needle syringe provision, health education, brief intervention, and referral

Ideal Candidate
 

  • Tertiary qualifications in social science, health, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in delivery of evidence based health promotion including planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience working in community-based settings with diverse communities and in partnership with government and non-government organisations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of harm reduction and risks associated with injecting drug use.
  • Effective organisational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated high-level oral, written and computer skills.
  • Current NSW Drivers Licence (P1 and P2 acceptable).
