Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. The position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine.
Successful applicants will provide both inpatient and outpatient services at Westmead Hospital in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and will be expected to participate in the on-call consultant roster. The successful applicant will undertake and supervise inpatient and outpatient clinical activity in the Cystic Fibrosis Specialist Service. The successful applicant will supervise the activity and workloads for the inpatient CF team and help to manage the overall level of inpatient clinical activity for Cystic Fibrosis in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. In addition, the successful applicant will provide support for the clinical and administrative activities of the Post-graduate Fellow in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. The position is well suited for further clinical training in Cystic Fibrosis and Bronchiectasis and may be appropriate for undertaking further post-graduate research training (eg PhD) for suitable applicants. There is also a possibility for some further training in Sleep Medicine, or Interventional Bronchoscopy for suitable applicants.
Respiratory and Sleep Medicine services are provided through inpatient and outpatient care at Westmead hospital. The Department has 10.6 FTE Staff Specialists delivering tertiary care across a range of clinical sub-specialties including: cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, interventional bronchoscopy, sleep disorders service, respiratory function laboratory, and ambulatory clinics including general respiratory, respiratory failure, lung cancer, TB, COPD, ILD, severe asthma and ambulatory pulmonary rehabilitation programs (RACS). Ambulatory services comprise a significant proportion of activity, including cystic fibrosis, home ventilation services through ENABLE, RACS and integrated care programs. Preventive services include promotion of smoking reduction and TB screening. Respiratory and Sleep Medicine also takes clinical management responsibility for the Respiratory Close Observation Unit at Westmead Hospital (acute inpatient NIV).
Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration
The position will be for a period of twelve months for the 2026 clinical Year
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
Selection Criteria:
- Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency
2. Sound clinical knowledge in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine as demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position.
3. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:
a. High level interpersonal and communication skills
b. Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team
c. Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice
d. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision
4. Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied, or clinical research within the Department.
5. Demonstrated clinical skills in flexible Bronchoscopy, pleural procedures and thoracic ultrasound.
6. Demonstrated clinical skills in the delivery of ambulatory care services appropriate to the management of cystic fibrosis patients in WSLHD.
7. Record of achievement in medical research is an advantage.
8. Research and Teaching interests in areas aligned with the Department’s interests (e.g. physician trainee education and supervision programs; cystic fibrosis, sleep, respiratory failure, bronchoscopy, or COPD).
