About the Opportunity
An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2 to join the John Hunter Hospital Outpatient Department and play a key role in developing innovative, nurse-led models of care for neurosurgical patients.
The Outpatient Department provides specialist non-admitted care across a range of surgical, medical and interventional specialties. Working collaboratively with the neurosurgical clinical team, outpatient operations and Allied Health, you will help improve access, coordination and continuity of care for patients across four key neurosurgical streams:
- Neurosurgical Spine
- Neurovascular
- Neuro-oncology
- Neurosurgical Other
This role provides an opportunity to work with a high degree of autonomy while contributing to the development of new clinical pathways and improving the patient experience.
🧠 Make an Impact in Neurosurgical Care
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2, you’ll play a key role in developing innovative, nurse-led models of care for neurosurgical patients. Working alongside specialist clinicians, Allied Health and the outpatient team, you’ll help ensure patients receive the right care, at the right time.
Your role will include:
🔎 Assessment & triage – assess referrals, identify red flags and coordinate investigations.
🩺 Clinical reviews – provide nurse-led follow-up and telehealth consultations.
📋 Care coordination – coordinate investigations, imaging and specialist reviews.
🤝 MDT leadership – coordinate Neurovascular, Neuro-oncology and Spinal MDTs.
🗂️ Clinic optimisation – prioritise patients and alternative care pathways.
📞 Patient support – provide education and care coordination.
🚀 Pathway development – support innovative nurse-led models of care.
📊 Quality improvement – contribute to audit, governance and service development.
About You
We’re looking for a Registered Nurse with strong clinical judgement, neurological assessment skills and knowledge of neurosurgical care. You’ll be confident working autonomously, managing complex care and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
You will also have:
- Strong communication, organisation and care coordination skills
- Excellent teamwork and leadership capabilities
- Confidence with telehealth and digital systems
- Experience in quality improvement and clinical data collection
Experience in neurosurgical nursing, outpatient services, advanced practice or care coordination will be highly regarded. We’re looking for someone who can think critically, work collaboratively and bring innovative ideas to improve patient care and outcomes.
