The Consultation Liaison (CL) Psychiatry Team provides specialist mental health in-reach to:

- Maitland Hospital (including Kurri Kurri Hospital)
- Belmont Hospital
This position is primarily based at Maitland Hospital, with flexibility depending on service need.
Working at the intersection of physical and mental health, the CL team supports patients across medical and surgical wards, emergency departments and inpatient units. We see a wide range of presentations - from mental health crises and suicide attempts, to delirium, dementia, trauma-related distress and complex comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions.
We also provide timely advice to hospital teams around consent, capacity, anxiety management and safe care planning, while supporting families through challenging hospital admissions.
Fast-paced. Collaborative. Deeply rewarding.
About the Role
This is a varied and engaging position where you will complete comprehensive mental health triage, assessment, risk formulation and safety planning for patients with complex presentations.
You’ll deliver brief inpatient interventions and, for Clinical Psychologists, provide short to medium term outpatient therapy. The role offers a strong mix of autonomy and teamwork, with opportunities to build meaningful working relationships with medical and surgical colleagues.
You will also play an important role in supporting staff wellbeing, helping teams navigate emotionally demanding clinical situations.
Clinical challenge with genuine impact.
About You
You are a clinician who is passionate about evidence-based care for people with co-morbid psychiatric and medical concerns. You communicate clearly and confidently, can work independently when required, and value being part of a supportive, high-functioning team.
A willingness to learn, adapt and contribute positively to team culture is essential.
Skilled. Supportive. Solutions-focused.
Support & Development
You’ll be supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team, the Area Director of Liaison Psychiatry, your Head of Discipline and the Service Manager. Regular supervision, monthly Clinical Review and Journal Club, and daily safety huddles ensure ongoing learning and connection.
You will commence in a supernumerary capacity, allowing a gradual and well-supported transition into the role.
