Where you'll be working

SESLHD Drug and Alcohol Service offers a range of treatment and support services for people with problems from their alcohol, prescription or illicit drug use, and/or their families and carers. Outpatient D&A services are located in clinics at the Langton Centre in Surry Hills, St George Hospital in Kogarah, and Caringbah Community Health Centre at Sutherland Hospital. Inpatient D&A services are provided at Sydney Hospital, Prince of Wales, St. George and Sutherland Hospitals. Our goal is to improve health, wellbeing and social outcomes for individuals, families and the community, related to drug and alcohol use.

The Role

The Clinical Nurse Consultant – Community Drug & Alcohol Consultation Liaison is a district position that works across the sites to deliver senior leadership in the coordination and delivery of community treatment services, including opioid agonist treatment and ambulatory care services. A primary purpose of this role is to engage and work closely with community based providers, particularly General Practitioners, to support them in the care of patients with alcohol and other drug problems. The position will provide consultation and liaison to care providers in community settings and establish a clear pathway for stepping care up and down to ensure that D&A care is being delivered in the most clinically appropriate setting


The position also has significant responsibilities in the delivery of clinical leadership and education, and participates in research, quality improvement activities and clinical services planning in accordance with the criteria for a Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 2 as per the NSW Public Health System Nurses and Midwives (State) Award The position works day shifts Monday to Friday inclusive.

Selection Criteria

  1. Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and current NSW Driver’s License.
  2. Minimum five years full time equivalent post qualification experience, with at least three years full time equivalent experience in the drug & alcohol specialty field, and post graduate qualifications relevant to the drug & alcohol nursing practice or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate.
  3. Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaborate within a multidisciplinary frame work with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
  4. Demonstrated effective communication and inter-personal skills across a variety of mediums and an understanding of the practice development framework.
  5. Proven ability to implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the utilisation of evidence based research.
  6. Demonstrated skills in strategic and clinical service planning including an understanding of organisational behaviour, change management and cultural change processes.
  7. Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching, competency in the use of contemporary information systems and experience in the development of specialty education programs.
  8. Demonstrated clinical expertise in client-centred consultancy with the ability to work independently.
