The BreastScreen NSW South Eastern Sydney Illawarra (SESI) service is one of the nine Screening and Assessment Services (SASs) of BreastScreen NSW. The BreastScreen NSW (SESI) service is operationally managed by the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and covers the regions within SESLHD and Illawarra and Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). Screening and assessment services are conducted at several fixed and mobile sites across the SESLHD and ISLHD districts. Follow-up of women with screen-detected abnormalities takes place in assessment clinics at the St. George, Randwick and Wollongong sites.

 

The Breast Physician is responsible for the provision of high quality clinical care, particularly for clients requiring diagnostic assessment services. The assessment clinics involve a multi-disciplinary team of radiologists, surgeons, radiographers, nurse counsellors and administration staff. Investigation of possible mammographic abnormalities may include additional mammographic views, ultrasound, needle biopsy.
 


BreastScreen NSW (SESI) has three assessment sites located: St George Hospital, Kogarah; Royal Hospital for Women Randwick; Crown Street, Wollongong. The Breast Physician role will be rostered to assessment sites as required in accordance with the assessment clinic schedule and service demands. 

 

Duties of this role will include the following - 

  • Coordinate clinical aspects of assessment services to achieve the best clinical outcome.
  • Demonstrate effective, appropriate, and timely consultation of other health professionals as needed for optimal client care.
  • Contribute to a workplace environment that encourages collaboration within and across health care teams to optimise outcomes for clients.
  • Assist the assessment radiologist to complete assessment procedures such as breast biopsies under breast ultrasound. This must include following the appropriate consent process for these procedures.
  • Complete breast examination as required within the assessment clinic.
  • Monitor pathology results and liaise with the pathology department as required.
  • Contribute to the results correlation, generation and provision process.
  • If requested/trained provide reading services under the supervision of a specialist radiologist.
  • Address clinical issues and questions particularly in relation to the assessment clinics for clients and their GPs.
  • Liaise with clients and clients’ GPs (as required) about BreastScreen NSW (SESI) assessment results.
  • Act in accordance with, and contribute to, the achievement of the BreastScreen Australia’s National Accreditation Standards.
  • Attend to enquiries on clinical matters form the Director, clients and other staff.
  • Provide clinical input into data collection, entry and retrieval and review clinical data as necessary.

The primary location of this position may be varied as agreed with the Director BreastScreen NSW (South Eastern Sydney Illawarra) and as approved by MDAAC to other facilities in SESLHD.

  1. Registration or eligible for registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA).  Candidate to provide on application AHPRA Registration Number:     
  2. Fellowship of the Australasian Society of Breast Physicians and/or equivalent specialist recognition as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1973 and the relevant Award/Determination, and demonstrated subspecialty training in subspecialty experience in breast cancer and/or breast imaging.
  3. Demonstrated experience in the provision of clinical breast examination, interpretation of mammography and breast biopsies.
  4. Knowledge of the BreastScreen program, the National Accreditation Standards, and breast cancer in relation to its presentation and treatment.
  5. Demonstrated ability to provide high quality, compassionate medical care. 
  6. Exceptional communication skills including working collegially and collaboratively with members of the multidisciplinary team. 
  7. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional education.
  8. Current unrestricted NSW Driver's Licence and ability/willingness to travel for work purposes across BreastScreen NSW (SESI) assessment sites.
