The Role

The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) is responsible for supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people when dealing with health-related issues at The Sutherland Hospital (TSH). The AHLO is required to work effectively with hospital staff and other agencies in the community, in order to provide support and assistance to persons and families receiving care at TSH.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  2. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads, to work independently as well as part of a team and to work within a hospital setting.
  3. Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, including historical contexts which may influence Aboriginal health, and national and state policies/strategies relating to Aboriginal health.
  5. Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities, and network with other services and health professionals.
  6. Knowledge of confidentiality, documentation and information management, relevant legislation, ethics and duty of care, and mandatory reporting requirements in an Aboriginal primary health care environment.
  7. Competent computer skills utilising varied and appropriate software programs (e.g. MS Word processing, data management systems and spreadsheets).
  8. Knowledge of quality improvement and experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.
