About the Opportunity
The Health Promotion Team at South Western Sydney Local Health District is looking for a flexible, adaptable and energetic Aboriginal Health Education Officer to join their team.

A typical day will involve working with partners including your HARP Health Promotion colleagues, the SWSLHD Aboriginal Health team, clinical services and Aboriginal organisations.  You’ll be planning, implementing and evaluating projects such as the Deadly Liver Mob project which makes testing and treatment easy for people at risk of STI and viral hepatitis.

You will work as part of a small, supportive team. You will have access to ongoing cultural support and supervision through the Health Promotion Service and through the Aboriginal Health Unit. Joining SWSLHD will also mean that you will have lots of support and opportunities, including access to our Aboriginal Staff Network and attending relevant gatherings and cultural and community events.

This position focuses on increasing Aboriginal community awareness of sexual health and blood borne viruses, as well as access to testing, treatment and support services.  It’s an opportunity to be part of a dynamic state- wide program and to and learn from committed and experienced project partners.  If you are comfortable dealing with sensitive issues such as sexuality and drug use and want to help reduce the impact of HIV, STIs and viral hepatitis in Aboriginal communities, we want to hear from you!

  

What You'll be Doing
The purpose of this position is to improve the health of Aboriginal people living in south western Sydney by contributing to Health Promotion programs of work in line with South Western Sydney Local Health District and the Ministry of Health’s goals, principles, and strategies.

The Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer (AHPO) will work in the STI & Blood Borne Virus stream and contribute to evidence based and/or innovative programs of work.

The AHPO will primarily be responsible for working with the team to:

  • strengthen protective factors for blood-borne virus (BBV) prevention and sexual health in the Aboriginal community,
  • reduce the health impact of viral hepatitis, HIV and STIs in the Aboriginal community.

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in health promotion planning, implementation, evaluation and dissemination particularly relating to Blood Borne Virus prevention and sexual health issues and promotion for Aboriginal communities, particularly understanding of and sensitivity to issues relating to sexual health and BBV for Aboriginal communities.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience of current health promotion theory and evidence-based practice.
  4. Understanding of issues that may impact service delivery in Aboriginal communities.
  5. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain partnerships with other staff and government, non-government and community organisations. Including experience working in community-based settings with Aboriginal communities.
  6. Effective organisational, problem solving and team skills including the ability to work on a variety of projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  7. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills, including skills in use of common computer packages preferably Microsoft Office, MS Outlook, social media and some desktop publishing skills.
  8. Demonstrated experience in health promotion or health education OR qualifications in health OR willingness to complete further training as identified.
  9. Must possess a valid Australian Drivers Licence (excluding learner driver's licences). If not already in possession, a NSW Drivers Licence must be obtained within 3 months of appointment.
