About the roles:
Hunter New England offers a comprehensive, supportive and diverse Intern Pharmacist experience designed to build your clinical capability in a hospital. These 12-month Internship positions offer comprehensive pre-registration training aimed at preparing skilled hospital Pharmacists to meet critical needs within NSW hospitals. As part of one of our highly-skilled pharmacy teams, you’ll be immersed in a wide range of clinical settings, from acute care to specialist wards, gaining hands-on experience in dispensing, preparing, and distributing medications, handling discharge and outpatient prescriptions, and delivering crucial medication education to patients and healthcare colleagues.
In this Intern Pharmacist role you’ll work alongside experienced pharmacists and other allied health clinicians who are committed to your growth, offering structured supervision, regular feedback, and tailored learning opportunities to help you meet AHPRA registration standards. With access to a varies patient population and diverse clinical presentations, you’ll develop a deep understanding of hospital pharmacy practice while contributing meaningfully to patient care from day one. This is more than an internship, it’s a supported pathway to becoming a confident and capable hospital pharmacist.
What is on offer:
This application is for three hospitals in Hunter New England; John Hunter Hospital, Maitland Hospital and Tamworth Hospital. You can select which hospital you would prefer (or select all locations if you are up for anything!)
No matter which location you apply for our successful candidates will be supported by the Hospital’s Pharmacy team and the Director of Pharmacy. Ongoing training and education will be provided through formal and informal learning opportunities.
About the locations and services:
John Hunter Hospital (two positions available):
John Hunter Hospital (JHH) is the largest tertiary hospital within Hunter New England Local Health District and offers a fantastic and dynamic learning environment for Pharmacists. JHH services the wider community across diverse specialties including general medicine, neurology, cardiology, Emergency medicine and critical care. As a major tertiary centre, it provides extensive surgical, outpatient, and intensive care services, supported by a collaborative pharmacy department that plays a key role in multidisciplinary patient care and professional development. As a member of the Pharmacy team you would work collaboratively with health professionals, contributing to holistic patient care across diverse clinical areas. The Pharmacy Department plays a vital role in service delivery, providing both clinical services that support medication safety and delivery, therapeutic decision-making, as well as patient and staff medication education. JHH promotes professional development through supervision, interprofessional learning, and structured upskilling/training, making it an ideal setting for intern Pharmacists to thrive.
Maitland Hospital (one position available):
Maitland Hospital offers an extensive range of services, including maternity care, gynaecology, paediatrics with a special care nursery, medical and rehabilitation services, and a variety of surgical procedures such as orthopaedics and day surgery. The hospital also features a busy emergency department, an adult intensive care unit, and dedicated services for mental health, dental, renal, and diagnostic care. As one of the newer facilities in the region, Maitland Hospital is equipped with modern infrastructure and advanced clinical technologies that support high-quality patient care and a fantastic learning environment for health professionals. Located around 30mins from Newcastle in the scenic Lower Hunter Valley, the hospital is surrounded by picturesque river landscapes and historic architecture. This combination of clinical experiences and professional opportunity together with relaxed lifestyle makes Maitland an exceptional place to live and work.
Tamworth Hospital (one position available):
The Pharmacy team at Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital (TRRH) is a highly experienced and collaborative team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, delivering comprehensive clinical and support services not only within TRRH but also across 12 rural and regional hospitals throughout the New England North West. TRRH is a 300-bed rural referral teaching hospital offering a broad range of medical and surgical specialties and services including general medicine, neurology, renal, cardiology, oncology, rehabilitation, general surgery and orthopaedic surgery. The hospital also provides obstetric, paediatric, and mental health care. Critical care capabilities include a Level 5 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), and Coronary Care Unit (CCU), alongside one of the busiest regional Emergency Departments in New South Wales. This makes TRRH an exciting and challenging environment for pharmacy practice and would allow you to develop diverse pharmacy skills.
About you:
- Bachelor or Masters of Pharmacy with eligibility for registration with the Australian Healthcare Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an intern pharmacist.
- You are enthusiastic, independent and adaptable, with an interest in the improving the health of our wider community.
- Are proactive, and eager to learn, ready to provide evidence-based care to improve the experience of patients and their families.
- You have excellent clinical knowledge and be ready to apply it in a practical way.
- Eager to embrace diverse, fast paced clinical settings with a desire to develop a broad generalist base for your Pharmacy career.
