Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the Visiting Medical Officer position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. This position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Plastic Surgery.
The successful applicant will undertake regular requirements of a VMO in performing surgery, participating in OPC service and the on-call roster, research and teaching of the JMOs and medical students. It is expected that the successful applicant will have completed at least a 1-year international Microsurgery Fellowship.
The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at Westmead Hospital is a busy teaching hospital unit with a special focus in both elective and emergency plastic and reconstructive surgery. The new model of care for the department is providing timely services for major microsurgical reconstructions for cancer and trauma patients at Westmead Hospital. The department currently has 3 surgeons performing microsurgical reconstructive services with an additional surgeon required to ensure service continuity and excellence of outcomes are maintained. Research and teaching are an important part of the service, and currently half of the department members hold a doctorate. There is also interest in commencing a lymphatic microsurgery service for lymphoedema patients. The other part of the department based at Auburn Hospital has a special focus in hand surgery.
Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) Determination 2014.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian college of Surgeons/Specialist registration or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable)
2. Sound clinical knowledge in Microsurgical Reconstructive Surgery and demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position
3. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:
a) High level interpersonal and communication skills.
b) Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.
c) Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.
d) Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision
SELECTION CRITERIA
1. Qualifications and credentials required for core scope of practice in the specialty.
2. Evidence of additional qualifications, skills and/or experience required for specific scope of practice for the specialty.
3. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:
a) Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
b) Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.
c) Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.
