About the Opportunity:

Liverpool Hospital invites you to become an integral part to our Cancer Services team as a Clinical Nurse Consultant, McGrath Breast Care Nurse.

In this role, you will act as a clinical expert, serving as a valuable resource for staff within Liverpool Hospital providing leadership in developing and enhancing specialist services for women presenting with Breast Cancer

You will be required to;

  • Communicate effectively with patients and their primary caregivers to assess needs and provide or facilitate relevant support, information, education, advice, and counseling and actively participate in the Cancer Therapy Centre and relevant wards at Liverpool Hospital.
  • Maintain close relationships with the Medical Oncology and Palliative Care Departments ensuring continuity of care and services for breast cancer patients by actively participating in the multidisciplinary team and contributing to treatment planning for optimal patient care.
  • Liaise with relevant service providers, including community service providers, ensuring comprehensive support for patients with breast cancer.
  • This role reports operationally to the Nurse Manager Cancer Services and professionally to the Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services, Liverpool Hospital whilst working collaboratively with the Operational Nurse Manager, Clinical Steam Manager Cancer & Medical Imaging, and the McGrath Foundation.


This position requires individuals to have relevant post graduate qualifications in breast care nursing or cancer nursing with a minimum first unit of the post graduate certificate, and willingness if deemed necessary to complete the post graduate certificate in breast care nursing.

Experience in Breast Cancer Nursing is essential!

If you do not have formal education in breast care nursing, then an active understanding that they will be encouraged and supported by the McGrath Foundation and LHD to obtain post-graduate qualifications in breast care studies.
This will require the Breast Care Nurse to commence in the role within the McGrath Foundation Associate Pathway.

Where You'll Be Working:

  • Liverpool Hospital, founded in 1813, is the major health service for south-western Sydney, providing services to the local government area of Liverpool City Council as well as district services to residents and visitors in the area. It also provides a range of state-wide services in areas such as critical care and trauma, neonatal intensive care and brain injury rehabilitation.
  • The Hospital provides a health service of international standing, with 23 operating theatres, capacity for 877 beds, diagnostic and imaging services, emergency and trauma care, maternity, paediatric, cancer care, mental health, ambulatory care, allied health and medical and surgical services from birth to aged care.
  • Liverpool Hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment. The $790 million Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct (LHAP) project will provide enhanced facilities and an increased capacity to meet future significant population growth for South Western Sydney.
  • Liverpool Hospital is a principal referral and teaching Hospital of the University of NSW and the Western Sydney University and also welcome students from over 20 universities and colleges.
  • Located in the heart of Liverpool City, the hospital is close to public transport, shopping centres and eateries.

    1. Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
    2. At least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years full time experience as a breast care nurse in Oncology, Palliative Care, Breast Cancer Nursing or related discipline. Approved post graduate nursing qualifications in a field relevant to the specialty field or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the organisation.
    3. Demonstrated evidence of strategies used to maintain current knowledge of clinical practice advances and research in the relevant specialty.
    4. Demonstrated ability to apply expert knowledge to provide safe compassionate quality care that is culturally responsive.
    5. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and engage with patients/consumers, carers and the multidisciplinary health care team to identify and ensure responsiveness of care needs.
    6. Demonstrated capacity to interact with others in a personable and professional manner and personally resolve conflicts when they arise.
    7. Demonstrated evidence of the use of critical thinking as it relates to the delivery of advanced evidenced based nursing care.
    8. Demonstrated understanding and participation in risk management, work health and safety and quality improvement in the workplace.
