Where you'll be working

Prince of Wales Hospital is a 440 bed tertiary referral facility with specialties unique to this campus such as spinal cord injuries and interventional neuroradiology. A new Acute Service Building opened in early 2023 with state of the art modern facilities aimed at providing an exceptional staff experience and enhanced patient and family outcomes. It includes an expanded Emergency Department and Intensive Care Units, a Community Management Centre, and replacement of multiple existing inpatient wards with contemporary facilities. There will also be new research, education and training spaces, including additional spaces funded by UNSW Sydney, to enable clinical innovation and research, biomedical engineering, and clinical translational research laboratories collocated directly alongside clinical staff providing acute healthcare services. 
The hospital is accessible via a light rail service which stops right outside the main entrance, along with a range of bus services. Offering impressive beaches and coastal walks coupled with boutique restaurants, transport links and a vibrant nightlife, you’ll never be short of things to do in this progressive community. 

The position sits within the social work Neurosciences Team and will provide a social work service to patients and their carers within the clinical areas of Intensive Care, Community Assessment Unit, Emergency Department.  This role will be responsible for the provision of a high-quality social work service not only within the assigned clinical areas but also to provide support and cover in other clinical areas across the Neurosciences Team as required.  The successful applicant will have excellent communication and time management skills with relevant experience, and knowledge being desirable but not necessary with training and support available. You will complete psychosocial assessments, provide counselling around adjustment to illness, crisis and bereavement support, crisis intervention, referral to community services and discharge planning. 

Selection Criteria:

  1. Qualifications in accordance with Schedule C of the NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award and eligibility for membership of the AASW
  2. Extensive post graduate clinical experience in relevant specialty area (including providing crisis interventions) with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing clinical and professional learning
  3. Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills including the ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, throughout all organisational levels
  4. Ability to provide in-depth advice and education to enhance service delivery and to guide and support others in providing service excellence, with the capacity to provide clinical supervision to other staff
  5. Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to apply advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with situations of a novel, complex or critical nature
  6. Ability to initiate, lead, complete and share quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and lead ongoing quality improvement activities with other staff
  7. Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise your own and team work requirements effectively within agreed time frames
  8. Current drivers licence (or a willingness to travel in accordance with the demands of the position) and the ability to participate in the After Hours Crisis On-Call service, and work across a seven day roster (including weekends)
