About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Staff Specialist Psychiatrist to join the Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI) at the Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH), Randwick as part of the ESMHS. This is an exciting opportunity to: provide subspecialist consultation in neuropsychiatry; contribute to research and knowledge translation; contribute to development, delivery and evaluation of programs offered by NPI. The NPI provides a unique academic and clinical environment for ongoing development. 

About the Role

You will be based at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at Prince of Wales. This is a permanent part-time staff specialist position (0.4 FTE). The service is a tertiary referral service providing assessments to people with neuropsychiatric conditions including neurocognitive disorders, drug-induced movement disorders, Tic disorders, functional neurological disorders and other neuropsychiatric conditions. The NPI has an attachment with the Comprehensive Epilepsy Service at POWH and provides assessment and treatment of patients with epilepsy and neuropsychiatric complications or assessment needs. The NPI has academic and research relationships with UNSW, Mindgardens and the Black Dog Institute. In addition to patient consultation, part of your role will include the provision of neuropsychiatry consultation-liaison services, capacity building, research and knowledge translation. The neuropsychiatrists within the unit have clinical leadership roles with psychiatry trainees, neuropsychologists, administration officer, and affiliated allied health forming the service.

Your clinical duties will encompass:

  • Neuropsychiatry consultation-liaison services to the comprehensive epilepsy service, consultation liaison psychiatry services, inpatient mental health units.
  • Training and workforce development including education, training and supervision to psychiatry trainees and broader service.
  • Multidisciplinary case conference assessments and outreach (including telehealth). 
  • Comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessments engaging patients and their family/carers in an outpatient setting.
  • Research and knowledge translation – A significant part of the role includes ongoing leadership and contribution to research and translational projects in enhancing clinical practice for patients with neuropsychiatric conditions.

The primary location of this position may be varied as agreed with the Director of Medical Services and as approved by MDAAC to other facilities in SESLHD.

  1. Registration or eligible for registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). Candidate to provide AHPRA Registration Number on application.
  2. Fellowship of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and/or equivalent specialist recognition as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1973 and the relevant Award/Determination, and demonstrated subspecialty training in Psychiatry.
  3. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
  4. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality service in the specialty, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
  6. Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites. Demonstrated commitment to provision of a high standard of clinical care in the public sector setting.
  8. Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
