The Role
The Aboriginal Care Coordinator (Cancer Services) will perform a liaison role by supporting, guiding and referring Aboriginal clients, family members and carers to access timely and appropriate SESLHD services for cancer management and prevention. The position aims to improve access, equity and health care for Aboriginal people with cancer, promoting patient centred care and a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. A large component of the role is to ensure care coordination for each person. Understand culturally appropriate service delivery such as connection and sense of belonging to land, Men’s and Women’s business, impacts of inter-generational trauma, kinship values, language barriers and the contributing factors that impact social determinant’s of health.

Selection Criteria
- This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
- Hold qualification in Aboriginal primary health care or other health related discipline, or relevant equivalent work experience.
- Demonstrated active involvement in ‘lived experience’ in the local Aboriginal communities, with a deep understanding and commitment to improving the health challenges impacting Aboriginal communities.
- Experience of cultural protocols such as Men’s and Women’s Business in a health setting.
- General understanding of the health care system and the ability to guide Aboriginal people through the system in a culturally safe way.
- Demonstrated health care experience and sound leadership skills to facilitate effective and culturally appropriate education and training.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong stakeholder relationships, and confidence in negotiating with clinicians as part of the multidisciplinary team to advocate for best patient care.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication, word processing and email skills, with the ability to be self-directed and flexible, working across various sites, and managing competing priorities and tasks.
