The vision for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) is ‘exceptional care, healthier lives’. SESLHD is committed to enabling our community to be healthy and well, and to providing the best possible compassionate care when people need it.

Barkala is a 19-bed acute geriatric ward that provides specialised care for older patients presenting with complex medical conditions. The ward manages patients who are acutely unwell, often with multiple comorbidities, and provides care for conditions such as acute delirium, exacerbations of chronic illness, functional decline, and in some circumstances palliative care. Care is delivered through a multidisciplinary, person-centred approach focused on stabilisation, assessment, and discharge planning.

Embedded within Barkala is the Aged Care Assessment Unit (ACAU), an additional 9-bed specialised assessment unit. ACAU provides rapid comprehensive geriatric assessment for older patients requiring early specialist review and intervention.

ACAU operates under a Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) model of care, with an expected length of stay of up to 48 hours. During this time patients undergo expedited investigations, multidisciplinary assessment, and early treatment to support timely clinical decision-making. Where appropriate, this approach supports early discharge back to the community with appropriate supports in place.

The ACAU model assists with patient flow from the Emergency Department, reducing prolonged ED stays for older patients and supporting improved outcomes through early geriatric assessment and intervention.

ACAU/Barkala has the capacity for 8 telemetry monitored beds. Telemetry monitoring is used for admitted patients with chronic arrhythmias or where monitoring may assist with the investigation, prevention and management of falls.
